2010 Reading Garden

Carson, Compton, Gardena, Long Beach, Lomita, Lynwood, Torrance and Beach cities area elementary schools are invited to participate in the 2010 Reading Garden Challenge, a joint initiative of the Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Chartable Foundation, and The Home Depot. The Challenge encourages schools and students (grades K-5) to focus on Earth Day by reading Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax and answering the Challenge Questions for the opportunity to have a Reading Garden built at their school. The top five (5) schools with the most completed entries will be entered into a random drawing conducted by the LA Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and The Home Depot. The winning school will have a Reading Garden built at their school by the LA Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and The Home Depot on Earth Day (April 22).

All schools interested in participating must meet the following criteria (additional restrictions may apply):

  • Have a viable 40' x 30' grass or dirt space available for the Reading Garden
  • District approval for the build including Risk Management and District Carpenter
  • Staff available to maintain the garden
  • Agreement to review of garden maintenance
  • Available for installation April 19-22, 2010

Schools meeting the criteria should download the Reading Garden Challenge Rules and Questions and distribute to students.
