The MLS season is almost upon us.

When the LA Galaxy took the training pitch on Monday, they did so with the season opener against Real Salt Lake less than a month away. Following training, Bruce Arena provided an injury update on the likes of Todd Dunivant and Jaime Penedo, who the Galaxy boss says are approaching full fitness. Meanwhile, Robbie Rogers remains on the mend with Arena stating that he’s “getting closer to returning to the field.”

Even though the Galaxy are turning their focus to RSL, that does not mean that they’ve forgotten the issues of that led to the team’s downfall a year ago. In a conversation with reporters on Monday, midfielder Marcelo Sarvas eloquently laid out the team’s issues in 2013 and how exactly they hope to correct them this season.

“What we expect to see different than last year is that first: when we’re leading we need to be able to hold for results. Secondly, we conceded many goals on corners and fouls and we need to play differently [this year],” said Sarvas. “Third, we need to have presence in the box and have the ability to put the ball inside [the penalty area]. If we did this last season then we could be champions. The game is the same for us, we’re going to be building from the back, try to find the last pass and let just simply let our guys play.”

CARSON, Calif. – With the unveiling of the new LA Galaxy kits on Monday, several players will be donning new jersey numbers.

Midfielder Gyasi Zardes will be wearing the No. 11 in 2014 after wearing No. 29 a year ago while goalkeeper Brian Perk will wear No. 1 after wearing No. 24 last season.

As for the new additions Rob Friend will be wearing No. 16, Baggio Hušidić is donning No. 6, Stefan Ishizaki will wear No. 24, Bradford Jamieson IV will don the No. 38, Raul Mendiola will wear No. 40, while new Brazilian forward Samuel will wear the No. 9 kit. Of the potential new signings defender James Riley has worn the No. 26 this preseason while Dan Gargan has donned the No. 33 which was formerly worn by Jose Villarreal.

Zardes is excited for the move to a lower number and hopes that the switch leads to more confidence on the field in his second year with the club.

“I’m just trying to be more confident," said Zardes. "I've got one year under my belt to build upon so I know how it is to go through a season as a professional. I’m just trying to use my experiences to my advantage."

CARSON, Calif. -- The LA Galaxy dealt defender Greg Cochrane to the Chicago Fire on Monday in exchange for a conditional draft pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft.

Cochrane made just a single start for the Galaxy this preseason (during their 2-1 victory over F.C. Shirak) after making a total of 15 showings in all competitions during 2013 campaign. Despite an injury to regular left back Todd Dunivant, Cochrane had fallen behind expected signing James Riley in the depth chart.

The deal to trade Cochrane could bode well for veteran trialist Dan Gargan who has been with the club throughout the preseason. LA released defender Brian Gaul last week.

LA Galaxy captain Robbie Keane was named the Republic of Ireland's Senior International Player of the Year on Sunday in a ceremony at the RTE Television Studios in Dublin

Keane tallied eight goals internationally to boost his all-time Ireland national team record to 62 goals. The Ireland captain's international tally is fourth among European international goal scorers behind Ferenc Puskás (89 goals for Hungary and Spain), Sándor Kocsis (75 goals for Hungary), Gerd Müller, and Miroslav Klose (both with 68 goals for Germany).

The 33-year-old has now won Ireland's Senior International Player of the Year award two times and the FAI Young International Player of the Year award twice.

Although the award is certainly an honor for Keane, it is his acceptance video that is a must-see.

Club Tijuana came within 10 minutes of their first road victory in over a year, but a late goal by Liber Quiñones sealed a 1-1 draw for the Xolos against Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, and extended Tijuana's road winless streak to 19 games.

Midfielder Christian Pellerano gave Tijuana the lead six minutes into the match as a failed Veracruz clearance of a Xolos' corner fell perfectly for the Argentine who slotted it past the goalkeeper for the finish. Tijuana went down a man in the 78th minute as Pellerano was sent off for his second yellow  leaving the Xolos to play with 10 for the remainder of the game. Up a man, Veracruz made Xolos pay three minutes later when the Tiburones Rojos (Red Sharks) took advantage of some shambolic Tijuana defending as Angel Reyna floated a pass over the visitors back-line to a waiting Quiñones who easily fired a shot past Cirilo Saucedo for the equalizer.

Former Galaxy striker Herculez Gomez and Texas-native Greg Garza started and fellow American Joe Corona came on midway through the first half due to a shoulder injury to Fernando Arce. Paul Arriola and recent U.S. National team call-up Edgar Castillo were not on the game day roster.

Highlights of the draw are below.

There's no question that Robbie Keane is what makes the LA Galaxy tick.

In the latest installment of MLSsoccer.com's The Throw-in, Jonah Freedman discusses the importance of the Galaxy's Irish captain and the influence that he has had on the team in an very interesting piece. In his piece, Freedman breaks down the importance of Landon Donovan to Keane's success, but for good measure, I went a little deeper and broke down the LA captain's numbers ( in all MLS competitions) when he's beside Donovan up top, when Donovan is on the pitch in midfield and when he is out of the lineup.

WHEN DONOVAN IS IN MIDFIELD: 11 goals.  (3 in 2011, 4 in 2012, 4 in 2013)

WITHOUT DONOVAN ON THE FIELD: 8 goals (0 in 2011, 5 in 2012, 3 in 2013)

PARTNERED ALONGSIDE EACH OTHER: 22 goals. (0 in 2011, 13 in 2012, 9 in 2013)

It's time for yet another look at the new LA Galaxy primary kit.

In this latest image, we have eight stripes in a sash on what appears to be the bottom half of the jersey. When you compare it alongside with the jersey portion that was unveiled earlier in the week, it's safe to ascertain that there will be 11 stripes on the kit.

Also, there is word that the Galaxy will be unveiling the jerseys in a campaign that will include Galaxy supporters, current LA players as well as several team legends from yesteryear.
