Lost in the talk of LA Galaxy attacker Raul Mendiola’s MLS debut during last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to the Houston Dynamo was yet another 2014 debut—the first appearance of LA midfielder Robbie Rogers.

After being sidelined with a stress reaction during preseason, Rogers made several appearances for LA Galaxy II before making his 2014 MLS debut in the Galaxy’s 1-0 defeat to the Houston Dynamo last Saturday.

During his brief 25 minute shift, Rogers was solid as he made several probing runs while trying to test the Houston defense.  Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena is quick to note that Rogers is by no means at full fitness, but the improvement is quite apparent in the eyes of the midfielder.

"Everything is a step, definitely, and I feel like I've been improving," said Rogers, who is expected to be available for Wednesday's clash with FC Dallas. "We have two big games at home coming up, and we need to get points and we need to make StubHub Center a fortress. Hopefully, I can contribute."

CARSON, Calif. – Marcelo Sarvas is making his steady return from injury, but don’t expect the midfielder to be ready for either of the LA Galaxy’s two matches this week.

Sarvas trained for the first time on Tuesday since suffering left MCL strain prior to the Galaxy’s match with the Colorado Rapids earlier this month. Since the injury, Sarvas has been steadily trying to return to fitness and after his first full training session, the 32-year-old set his target date for a return to the field.

“I felt very good and this is the last step, which is always the hardest one because it’s the transition from physical therapy to the field. I’m happy and I feel so let’s see because maybe in one or two weeks I’ll be ready,” said Sarvas. “It was a fast rehab and we did the right work and treatment so I’m happy with how it goes.”

“The target is Chicago," said Sarvas.  "But you never know because a soccer player could sleep and the next day feel better. It could even be Sunday [against the Philadelphia Union] but you never know.”

And the fiercely competitive Sarvas is eager to get back to the field and help turn around a Galaxy team that currently finds itself in last place.

“It’s frustrating to be injured and be outside [the team]. The team has been playing good with some mistakes, but of course, I would like to be there to help the team,” said Sarvas. “Let’s see how it goes because we'll have a chance against Dallas to get things right."

There's a new boss with Manchester United.

On Monday, the Red Devils announced that Netherlands National Team head coach Louis van Gaal has signed a three-year contract to serve as the new manager at Manchester. The current Dutch head coach has enjoyed a decorated managerial career with stints at Ajax -- where he won the UEFA Champions League --, FC Barcelona, Az Alkmar, and Bayern Munich. The 62-year-old van Gaal will take the position after the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which means that he'll make his first appearance on the United touchline during their July 23 match against the LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl

The Dutchman's number two in Manchester will be United legend Ryan Giggs who retired from football in a separate announcement. The Welsh star calls time on a 14-year career that has seen the United regular  win 13 titles for the Red Devils. Giggs served as United interim manager at the end of the 2013/14 season after the firing of former manager David Moyes.
