MLS Regular Season

CARSON, Calif. -- Robbie Keane tallied his second goal of the season in LA's 3-0 rout of Chivas USA.

On the strike, Keane admitted while the play developed like he expected, the goal was a bit of a welcome surprise.

"I just ran [into the penalty area] and I thought that Dan was going to smash me. I don’t know whether it hit my arm or my side," said Keane. "I knew that it hit off me and I anticipated that the goalkeeper was going to come out. I just jumped up to get my body in the way and lucky enough, it hit off me.”

In the latest edition of "By the Numbers" LAGalaxy.com looks back at the history of the SuperClasico between the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA.

CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy are hurting at right back, which will likely give Dan Gargan his first start in an LA uniform in Sunday’s SuperClasico.

With A.J. DeLaGarza still nursing a left ankle contusion and James Riley out for the next six months to repair a torn meniscus, Gargan is the likely candidate to slide into the outside back spot ahead of the match against Chivas. Signed just before the start of the 2013 campaign for just this purpose, Gargan admits that he’s ready for the challenge.

“Any player comes into a team with the desire to get on the field. Any opportunity that you get, I certainly want to take advantage of it,” said Gargan. “I’m looking forward to it. It’ll be my first Clasico and it has some history.”

Gargan was a member of Chivas USA in 2008 but never played in a game for that club before returning to the league a year later.

“That was an interesting time for me,” he recalled. “I had personal stuff that kind of outweighed me playing at the time that I had to take care of.

“I was lucky enough to be able to address those and still come back to have an opportunity to play again. It's been quite a path. To know the place I've been and the hard work it's taken is rewarding. Certainly there's a lot of lessons to be learned along the way and you keep those with you.”

CARSON, Calif. – Robbie Keane knows a thing or two about rivalries.

The Ireland international has played in some of the most renowned club rivalries in the world from Celtic vs. Rangers—which is Keane’s personal favorite battle—, Liverpool FC vs. Everton to Tottenham Hotspur vs. Arsenal, and he’d like to see the SuperClasico blossom into a great MLS rivalry.

But the LA Galaxy captain admits that the rivalry just isn’t there yet largely due to the lackluster crowds at Chivas home matches.

“A derby is about everyone getting involved. The atmosphere is electric and the place is full,” said Keane. “Unfortunately, there won’t be a great crowd and it’s a shame because we want this rivalry to be important as there are two teams in LA, but it’s not going to work unless we get a real hostile atmosphere and we probably won’t get that.”

Keane has shined against the cross-hall rivals with four goals and a single assist all-time against the Rojiblancos. But even though he’s had great success against Chivas, he’s hoping that their fans can breathe some life into the SuperClasico.

“I want the fans to support them. To have a rivalry, you need the whole package and fortunately the whole package isn’t there,” said Keane. “They get more people when they play us, but against Chicago for example they get around 2,000 to 4,000 people. Every atmosphere that I’ve played in has had a crazy atmosphere but it’s not just about the name of the two teams, it’s about the whole package. The half package is there, but not full just yet.”

CARSON, Calif. – Jaime Penedo is set to return to the fold this Sunday when the LA Galaxy take on Chivas USA in the SuperClasico.

Penedo was unable to suit up in LA’s last MLS match against Real Salt Lake on March 22 as he returned to Panama to finalize his visa, but is expecting to be back in the fold for Sunday’s match against LA’s cross-hall rivals.

“I feel good. I feel ready to play and to be able to support the team,” Penedo, who admitted that he, is still smarting over LA’s CCL defeat to Club Tijuana. “I think that I’m ready to support the team as soon as we play this weekend.”

Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena also gave Penedo the green light stating that the goalkeeper is “close to 100 percent” and will “definitely be available” for the Chivas USA match.

Pleased Penedo will be back in the lineup? Think Perk deserves another game?

CARSON, Calif. – Once the Galaxy kick off on Sunday, it will have been 182 days since Landon Donovan tied up Jeff Cunningham’s MLS all-time regular season goal scoring record last October against Chivas USA. Now Donovan will have an opportunity to gain sole possession of the league’s goal scoring record against that same Chivas side.

The 32-year-old has yet to find the back of the net in LA’s two MLS regular season matches or their CONCACAF Champions League series against Club Tijuana, but has tallied a great strike record against Chivas with 12 goals in all MLS competitions. Donovan is expecting to be in the lineup on Sunday despite suffering from tendonitis in his knee during his time with the U.S. National Team earlier in the week which prevented him from starting against Mexico

Although the SuperClasico is always a heated match despite LA’s dominance in the series standings, Donovan downplayed the idea that breaking the league’s goal scoring record against the cross-hall rivals would mean any more to him.

“I don’t think it would mean more because it’s against them, but I just like to score goals," said Donovan after training on Friday. "I feel like I've played pretty well in the first four games and I played okay the other night [against Mexico]. I feel like I’m doing well and moving well, but it’s always nice to hit the goal and I want to hit the goal.”

Donovan admits that he needs to be more selfish toward goal, but was quick to dispel any notion that the hunt for goal 135 is wearing on the attacker.

“I’m in a different phase. I don’t judge how I play based on if I score,” Donovan said. “I've played a lot of bad games where I scored then thought ‘oh, I’m great’ but I’d rather continue playing well and not score. I deserve for myself, I deserve to score. I deserve to score and I’m looking to score.”

CARSON, Calif. -- Robbie Rogers crossed a major hurdle in his road to recovery on Monday afternoon.

Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena confirmed that Rogers returned to full training for the first time since the opening week of the preseason. Rogers has been hampered with a stress reaction in his left ankle since January that the 26-year-old says occured due to overuse ahead of preseason preparations

"It was very good to have him back for the first time ," Arena told reporters on Monday.

In other injury news, Kofi Opare has also begun preparations after dealing with a right adductor injury that occured during preseason. Arena states that Opare began initial training a week ago, but is making strides to return. No time line or schedule has been set for when the defender  -- who is currently still technically on loan to LA Galaxy II -- will be able to suit up for the first team.

CARSON, Calif. -- Nine years ago today, Landon Donovan joined the LA Galaxy and changed the MLS landscape forever.

To commemorate the ninth anniversary of the star attacker's signing with the Galaxy, I look back at my top five Donovan moments in an LA kit on LAGalaxy.com.

But what was it like for Donovan's teammates when he joined the Galaxy after a brief stint in Germany?

"It was a shock to a lot of people since he was with the Earthquakes for so long and they were our biggest rival," Defender Todd Dunivant told LA Galaxy Insider on Monday. "At the time, Carlos Ruiz was our biggest player, but when Landon came it was just awesome. He's a game changer and helped us win the cup that year."

As for Dunivant's favorite Donovan moment?

"In 2005, we were the four seed in the playoffs going up against San Jose and in the first leg at The Home Depot Center, he scored a huge goal for us," Dunivant told LAGalaxy.com. "He snuck in behind their defense and got around Pat Onstad that put us up by two goals and gave us the confidence going into the road match at Spartan Stadium which was a tough place to play. He really gave us that extra boost and while a lot of people won't think of that moment, it was first major moment for the club and it set us on the path to winning that MLS Cup."

Check out video of that moment below at the 2:05:56 mark.

The LA Galaxy are off this weekend and as a way to recharge their batteries ahead of the long MLS season, the team's Brazilian contigent got into the Samba-spirit after training on Thursday and had a little bit of sing-a-long through the halls of StubHub Center.

CARSON, Calif. -- With James Riley lost to injury, the LA Galaxy will now trust in offseason signing Dan Gargan to add depth to the team's outside back positions.

Gargan was inserted in the 33rd minute of LA's 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake last Saturday after Riley's injury and gave a solid performance along the right side of defense against the defending Western Conference Champions. Now with Riley potentially out for several months due to possible surgery to repair an meniscus injury and A.J. DeLaGarza recovering from a left ankle contusion, Gargan is ready to provide defensive depth.

“I think I've been training well, and I think it was a little but unfortunate with a couple injuries that I had in preseason,” Gargan told reporters on Tuesday, “but I think Bruce has plenty of faith in me to get the job done. Obviously, you never want to see guys go down and it's unfortunate for James ... that's why Bruce put together the roster that he did that is experienced and comfortable playing multiple positions.”
