2011 Camps for Kids Recap

Presented by

Camps for Kids sponsored by Farmers Insurance is a joint program of the Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation and The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation that addresses childhood obesity by emphasizing the importance of exercise, health and nutrition. This summer, the Foundations hosted three camps (July 6, August 9, August 16) at The Home Depot Center’s Track and Field Stadium with approximately 200 children, ages 7-10, participating from a variety of organizations in Southern California.

The camps were divided into two rotations, exercise and fitness utilizing soccer and health and nutrition. Galaxy Soccer Camps coaches led the fitness portion of the camps. The coaches led the children in four different soccer stations, dribbling, passing, shooting, and small-sided games, while teaching them basic soccer skills. Before beginning the stations, the coaches spoke about the importance of eating breakfast and led the children through a basic warm-up.

For the health and nutrition component, the Foundations partnered with the Asthma & Allergy Foundation’s BreathMobile that offered kid-friendly educational sessions and asthma screenings in order to raise awareness, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ Street Smarts program that addressed street safety and health and distributed hand sanitizer and band aids, South Bay Family Mobile Clinic who provided screenings for children to check their weight, body mass index, and risk factors for heart disease and diabetes, First 5 LA’s Rethink Your Drink Campaign, who taught the children about the importance of drinking water and distributed water bottles and “Potter the Otter: A tale about Water” book, and California State University Dominguez Hill’s Nursing Program. Additionally, the Galaxy Street Team was on hand to ensure all the children had their fill of soccer, fitness and fun.

Galaxy players Todd Dunivant, Jovan Kirovski and Jack McBean also visited with the participants during the camps.

Each participant received a Farmers Insurance Camps for Kids t-shirt, a Revolution Foods’ lunch, Yoplait Light yogurt and a camp gift bag including a soccer ball, a bag of Sensible Portions snacks, Herbalife kids MultiVites chewable multivitamins and an activity booklet from MLS W.O.R.K.S.’ Active Bodies, Active Minds program, which is a soccer-centered community outreach initiative that provides resources to motivate and reward children for being mentally and physically fit.
