LA Galaxy vs Columbus Crew
The LA Galaxy hosted the visiting Columbus Crew at The Home Depot Center on Wednesday, July 20. The Galaxy was looking to extend its winning streak to 13 games. To help the Galaxy achieve this, the team was cheered on by 700 kids from Covenant House California, Upward Bound-Occidental College, America SCORES LA, LAPD SouthEast-PALs, Door of Hope, and El Nido Family Center. The first 6,000 fans in attendance were given LA Galaxy-Natural History Museum of Los Angeles lunch bags.
The children were seated in the Kicks for Kids section (section 127) as well as sections 113-115 because of the overwhelming response to the game. For those in attendance, the game was not disappointing as the Galaxy’s Sean Franklin scored his first career goal after teammate David Beckham’s free kick deflected off the wall. Kids from El Nido Family Center waved their blue and gold towels and lunch bags in the air as surrounding fans hugged each other in celebration of Franklin’s achievement.
The Galaxy’s 1-0 victory extended their unbeaten MLS streak and gave the kids a lot to cheer about. As the final whistle blew, the kids gathered their towels, lunch bags, leftover popcorn and Sour Patch candy, and made there way to the top of the section to meet their chaperones. As the groups left the stadium, echoes of the kids chanting, “Let’s Go Galaxy, Let’s Go!” could be heard.
Thanks to the 2011 Kicks for Kids Community Partners for donating tickets to Wednesday’s match and providing 700 kids an evening full of laughter, exciting giveaways, good treats, and lasting memories.
