Kicks for Kids Recap - July 4, 2010
LA Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders
In front of a sellout crowd of 27,000, the LA Galaxy defeated the visiting Seattle Sounders 3-1 at The Home Depot Center on Sunday, July 4. The Independence Day match featured the return of LA Galaxy and U.S. National Team members Edson Buddle and Landon Donovan, who were back in the lineup for the first time since they left for the World Cup in South Africa.
The Kicks for Kids groups were treated to its annual 4th of July reception where 500+ kids enjoyed a hot dog and soda. The kids made Galaxy signs, took pictures with Cosmo, received patriotic glow necklaces, colorful Kicks for Kids towels, and American flags to show their USA pride on this 4th of July game. This year’s guest included the Asian Youth Center, Homies Unidos, The Boys & Girls Club of San Gabriel Valley, LAPD-Hollenbeck PAL, AYSO Region 514, Hope 4 Kids, Hillsides and many more groups. After filling up on hot dogs and drinks, the Kicks for Kids participants were ready to see some fireworks on and off the field!
The Galaxy quickly earned a 1-0 lead with Galaxy forward Edson Buddle scoring his league leading 10th goal of the season with an assist from Galaxy forward Landon Donovan. The home team kept things going with another goal, this time by LA Galaxy midfielder Juninho in the 48th minute of the game. Groups like Casa Pacifica and The Blazer Learning Center leaped out of their seats and waved their personalized signs in the air. This was Juninho’s first goal of his MLS career. The Kicks for Kids groups had a brief scare when the Sounders scored a goal in the 66th minute, making the score 2-1 in favor of the home team, however, the groups quickly realized their team would be the winners of the night when Seattle Sounders’ defender James Riley accidentally scored against his own team putting the Galaxy up 3-1.
When the final whistle blew, the Kicks for Kids groups quickly jumped out of their seats and made their way to the tennis stadium to get prime seating for the annual 4th of July fireworks show. The groups left that night having watched the Galaxy’s first-ever win over the Sounders at The Home Depot Center and an amazing fireworks display. This 4th of July game was made possible through generous support of the Kicks for Kids Community Partners and the LA Galaxy Foundation.
