Kicks for Kids Recap - June 11, 2011

LA Galaxy vs Toronto FC

On a warm afternoon in Carson, CA, participants from the Kicks for Kids Program, Aviva Family & Children Services, People In Progress, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Orange County, and other groups, parked their cars and made their walk to the SouthWest area of the stadium. This Saturday’s game marked the beginning of many summer evening trips for children from these organizations.

Kicks for Kids chaperones exchanged their waivers for game tickets and rally towels at the Kicks for Kids booth. The groups scurried to get their tickets scanned, walked up the stairs and to section 127. Just two minutes into the game, Galaxy midfielder, Miguel López held the ball on the left side of the penalty area and slipped it over to the right side of the box, where an unmarked Chris Birchall raced in and fired a shot on goal.

CHICAR Youth Empowerment, Inner City Games Los Angeles, and Monte Vista Elementary School were amongst groups seated in the first 12 rows of section 127 and witnessed the action close up. The excitement was felt for the remainder of the first half and at halftime as groups refilled on snacks, popcorn, and drinks.

The excitement lasted momentarily, as former LA Galaxy player and current Toronto FC forward, Alan Gordon tied the score at 1-1 with a header to the back of the net early in the second half. As the game headed for a draw, the Galaxy’s forward, Juan Pablo Angel gave the Galaxy the lead with a thrilling goal. Again, the excitement filled the stadium but it did not last long as Gordon tied the score for the second time in the game ending in a 2-2 final.

Kicks for Kids participants enjoyed the game and the excitement due to the support of the Kicks for Kids Community Partners.
