LA Galaxy vs Sporting Kansas City
The LA Galaxy started with an offensive explosion as they took on Sporting KC; formerly know as the Kansas City Wizards, at The Home Depot Center on May 14. Long Beach Rescue Mission, City of Compton Parks and Recreation, LACER After-School program, Hollenbeck Police Activities League, and 109th Street Recreation Center were among the organizations invited to Saturday night’s game. As the groups sat in the Kicks for Kids’ section 127, they were brought to their feet a few times as shots were attempted on the Sporting Kansas City penalty box.
At the 39th minute, the Galaxy’s own defender Omar González redirected a ball into his own net and gave the Sporting KC a 1-0 lead. The lead did not last as Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was awarded a penalty kick and found the back of the net for the equalizer in the 44th minute. At the halftime break, Kicks for Kids groups saw a familiar friend walk by the top of section 127. LA Galaxy’s mascot Cozmo greeted the kids and posed for photos with several of the groups. Cozmo waved good-bye as halftime ended and the kids quickly rushed back to their seats for the second half action.
The halftime break did not slow down the Galaxy as Donovan scored a goal in the 46th minute with an assist from forward Chad Barrett. The Galaxy were not satisfied with a 2-1 lead and continued their frenzied scoring with a second goal from forward Juan Pablo Angel in the 64th minute that gave the Galaxy a 3-1 lead. The Kicks for Kids participants waved their yellow and white Kicks for Kids towels in excitement of the Galaxy lead. As the match moved into the final minutes, the fans were given one last treat as midfielder David Beckham found the back of the net on a free kick in the 87th minute.
The LA Galaxy rolled to a 4-1 victory over Sporting KC which all of the Kicks for Kids organizations were able to enjoy due to the contributions of the program’s Community Partners.
