LA Galaxy vs Real Salt Lake
On November 6th, the LA Galaxy continued their unbeaten playoff run and hosted the Western Conference Championship game against Real Salt Lake. A win would secure a spot in the 2011 MLS Cup game and the opportunity to win a championship at home in front of their fans at The Home Depot Center.
Excitement was in the air for this important match up and children from 109th Street Recreation Center, Boys Town California, Bresee Foundation, Give Back To The Children, Santa Ana PAALs, School On Wheels, and The Salvation Army-San Pedro got to witness the action in person. From the moment the groups picked up their tickets, the kids were chanting “Let’s Go Galaxy, Let’s Go” all the way to Section 127.
Within the first five minutes, everyone cringed as Real Salt Lake’s Robbie Russell almost scored with a corner kick that Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders deflected. After several minutes of back-and-forth possession, the kids were thrilled when Galaxy captain Landon Donovan scored the first goal. 27,000 Galaxy fans erupted in cheers in celebration of the goal.
The kids were bundled up in sweaters, scarves, and beanies, but completing their outfits were yellow LA Galaxy foam fingers they received at the entrance. Their posters were adorned with blue and black “GO GALAXY”, “I’m Ready LA”, and personalized thank yous to the Community Partners. The kids received LA Galaxy “Are you ready?” rally towels that they happily waved in the air after the Galaxy ‘s Mike Magee and Robbie Keane scored the next two goals.
The LA Galaxy defeated Real Salt Lake 3-1 and the Kicks for Kids groups were able to see the team be crowned the 2011 Western Conference Champions.
