Kicks for Kids Recap - October 1, 2011

LA Galaxy vs Real Salt Lake

The October 1 game, kicked-off at The Home Depot Center with an impressive overflow of the color Pink detailed throughout the stadium. The LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake players, coaches, staff, and fans showed their support for MLS League’s Breast Cancer Awareness initiative by wearing Pink themed items.

Kicks for Kids organizations like the Community Outreach & Opportunity program, College Ready Academy High School # 7, Hollywood PALs, Homies Unidos, Lakeview Charter High School, LAPD-SouthEast PALs, and LAPD-SouthWest Youth Programs checked-in and picked-up their tickets at the Kicks for Kids tent. Fans and kids were greeted by volunteers who distributed Pink Ribbons to show support for the cause.

The Star Spangled Banner began playing in the stadium and fireworks were seen shooting in the sky, the game was minutes. As the players found their position on the grass, the kids were amazed at LA Galaxy’s goalkeepers Josh Saunder’s Pink and Black jersey. The kids’ reaction grew much louder when it was revealed the teams would play with a pink soccer ball. Kids muttered to one another as they pointed out that some of their favorite players were wearing pink cleats.

Real Salt Lake was playing strong. At the 45th minute, Real Salt Lake’s Fabian Espindola scored on the Galaxy to lead at 0-1. The kids groaned and yelled in disbelief but continued to remain optimistic their favorite team would answer. The Kicks for Kids section’s wish came true at the 59th minute. Wearing pink cleats, the Galaxy’s Chad Barrett taps in the ball and ties the score at 1-1. This simple tap was not enough for the Galaxy. The Galaxy’s Todd Dunivant received a cross ball from teammate David Beckham and shots it towards the net, but the ball bounces off Real Salt Lake’s Nat Borchers’ thigh and into the Galaxy net. The stadium erupts in a confusion of screams as Borchers’ is in disbelief that he scored for the LA Galaxy.

The Kicks for Kids section 127 jumped up and down frantically and yelled at the top of their lungs. The Galaxy prevailed and outscored Real Salt Lake 2-1. The night was definitely a thrilling match for the kids and fans in attendance. Thank you to the 2012 Community Partners for inviting the kids to Saturday’s night game.
