Carson, Compton, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Lakewood, Lawndale, Lomita, Long Beach, Lynwood, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, San Pedro, and Torrance area elementary schools are invited to participate in the 2012 Reading Garden Challenge, a joint initiative of the Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation, and The Home Depot.  The Challenge encourages schools and students (grades K-5) to focus on Earth Day by reading Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax and creating original posters based on themes from the book for the opportunity to have a Reading Garden built at their school.

The top five (5) schools with the most Reading Garden Challenge posters submitted will be entered into a random drawing conducted by the LA Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and The Home Depot. The winning school will have a Reading Garden built at their school by the LA Galaxy Foundation, The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and The Home Depot. All students who participate in the challenge will be rewarded with a Reading Garden Challenge Certificate.

All schools interested in participating must meet the following criteria:
(additional restrictions may apply):

  • Have a viable 40’ x 30’ grass or dirt space available for the Reading Garden
  • District approval for the build including Risk Management and District Carpenter
  • Staff available to maintain the garden
  • Agreement to review of garden maintenance
  • Available for installation April 16-20 or April 23-27, 2012

2012 Important Dates and Deadlines:

  • Challenge Period: January 23 - March 9, 2012
  • Reading Garden Challenge Poster Submission Deadline: March 12, 2012
  • Selection of Winner: on or about March 16, 2012
