2013 LA Galaxy Foundation and Herbalife Family Foundation International Joint Community Program
November 19th San Salvador, El Salvador
Beneficiaries: Benjamin Bloom Kids Hospital, Francisco Campos Elementary School, FESA
During the November 2013 trip to El Salvador for a CONCACAF game against Metapan, LA Galaxy and Herbalife staff spent time visiting local youth with LA Galaxy alumni, Academy coach, and Salvadoran soccer legend Mauricio Cienfuegos. The group toured the Benjamin Bloom Kids Hospital visiting patients and their families and handing out small gifts to patients in addition to making monetary donation. Hospital physicians have chosen that the donation will benefit the physiotherapy unit and burn ward where children recover from life threatening second and third degree burns.
Next up Herbalife and Galaxy staff visited Cienfuegos' elementary school, Francisco Campos, where students got to hear from Cienfuegos and received lessons on the importance of education. The school received twenty-five new soccer balls, school supplies, and funds for a new roof at the school. The trip was capped by two soccer clinic La Fundacion Educando a un Salvadoreno (FESA )clinics lead by Cienfuegos. Every player in attendance received a soccer ball, t-shirt, and backpack compliments of Herbalife and the LA Galaxy Foundation. FESA will use the funds they received to purchase soccer equipment and maintain ongoing soccer programs.

September 24th San Jose, Costa Rica
Beneficiary: Club Sport La Libertad
In early 2013 the LA Galaxy Foundation(LAGF) and Herbalife Family Foundation(HFF) made a $10,000 donation to Club Sport La Libertad to benefit their afterschool soccer program for underserved youth. Returning to San Jose Costa Rica in September, the Foundation’s followed up on the original donation by hosting a soccer clinic for 100 youth and donating two new computers, school supplies, and soccer balls to Club Sport La Libertad. The clinic was run by LA Galaxy Academy coaches Gordon Kljestan and Mauricio Cienfuegos at Pryecto Goal. Youth that participated in the clinic were invited to watch the Galaxy train and received tickets to watch the game between Los Angeles and Isidro Metapan.
April 10th Monterrey, Mexico
Beneficiary: Hogar Santa Maria de Guadalupe
As part of its commitment to providing proper nutrition to children living in vulnerable situations, the Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF) joined the LA Galaxy Foundation (LAGF) in making a financial donation to the Hogar Santa Maria de Guadalupe. The contribution of $10,000 will be used to provide quality nutrition for the 39 children who are a part of the institution.
The Herbalife Family Foundation, through the Casa Herbalife program, has supported Hogar Santa Maria de Guadalupe, since 2012, creating a long-term partnership. Founded in 1970, the facility is dedicated to serve children between the ages 6 and 12 from low-income and single parent families as well as orphaned children or children whose parents cannot provide care while they work.
LA Galaxy President Chris Klein represented the LA Galaxy Foundation in making the donation.
“It is an honor for me and our club to be a part of this fantastic program which will help improve the quality of life for all of these children,” Klein said. “Both the Galaxy and the Herbalife Family Foundation are committed to providing all children with the proper nutrition that will allow them to lead a healthy and happy life. Who knows, we might find a Galaxy star of the future at the institution.”
March 7th: San Jose, Costa Rica
Beneficiary: Club Sport La Libertad Foundation
While on the road to face CS Herediano in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals the LA Galaxy Foundation and the Herbalife Family Foundation donated $10,000 to the Club Sport La Libertad Foundation. The La Libertad Foundation uses sports to help at-risk youth ages 17-and-under in the Pavas neighborhood of Costa Rica avoid a life of crime. The Foundation also provides mentorship, tutoring, appreciation of the arts, and job skills.
In partnership with Herbalife and the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica, Omar Gonzalez, Sean Franklin, Juninho, and Marcelo Sarvas conducted a 30-minute soccer clinic for 50 of the children from La Libertad and spent time with them after the clinic posing for photos and signing autographs. vine.co/v/bHTzwDhp5h0
“When you live in a country like [Costa Rica], you know how important a few words for the children are,” said Sarvas, who played for LD Alajuelense in Costa Rica prior to joining the Galaxy. “I think that it’s very beautiful for Galaxy and Herbalife to do this and help these people. I’m sure that (children from La Libertad Foundation) had a beautiful day and they will keep this in their memory for a while.”
February, 2013 Bogota, Colombia
Beneficiary: Casa Aprobi
Galaxy Assistant Coach Curt Onalfo & defender Omar Gonzalez, along with Herbalife CEO Michael Johnson and several Herbalife executives, had the pleasure of visiting the kids at Casa Aprobi in Bogota Colombia last week where the children sang, danced and played with Omar and Curt. The group toured the school and saw a day in the life of these amazing children. They also to made a large donation of $50,000 to the program from the Herbalife Family Foundation and LA Galaxy Foundation Joint Community Program.
