CARSON, Calif. -- In an announcement that shocked absolutely no one, LA Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo was named to MLSsoccer.com's Team of the Week after his stellar performance against Seattle Sounders FC

Penedo made an MLS career-high 10 saves as he led the Galaxy to a 1-0 victory over the Sounders, helping the Galaxy to their second win of the season. The Panamanian goalkeeper was joined by defender Omar Gonzalez who was named to the Week 6 squad's bench. The nod was the first time this season that a Galaxy player has been named to the league website's Team of the Week.

The complete squad is below.

CARSON, Calif. -- LA Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena addressed the media after the Galaxy's 1-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday.

His comments are below.

(On the play of Jaime Penedo...)

ARENA: He had an excellent performance today. Real big saves in the first half, got off his line well on a couple of occasions in the second half. Made some big saves, played very well. Stefan Frei made some important saves as well. The goalkeepers played well today for both teams.

(On Rafael Garcia's showing...)

ARENA: "He played very well. I don’t know how much he’s played with us in the past, but he put in an excellent shift today. A very good night. He’s been with us a number of years now, so he’s quite capable of stepping in and performing.

(On Jaime Penedo stepping up...)

ARENA: "His stepping up today was critical. Leonardo has been out, Robbie’s not in today, Jose and Mika didn’t train all week. We were really short-handed and guys stepped up. Gordon was a real man today. Obviously the winning goal, played strong the entire 90 minutes. I think he played quite well. You gotta win these kinds of games. It won’t go down as a classic by any means, but you have to grind it out and we got a critical three points."

(On the team's depth...)

ARENA: "We were a little thin in the week, the concentration and commitment by our team today was excellent. It’s great to get three points."

(On the status of Robbie Keane...)

ARENA: "Keane should be ready next week."

(On when he knew Keane would miss the Seattle game...)

ARENA: "Saturday in Vancouver."

Back from international duty, LA Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo is determined to keep up his banner run of form against Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Penedo appeared in Panama’s friendly victories over Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica before rejoining the Galaxy on Thursday. After two strong performances in Los Canaleros’ Gold Cup tuneups, Penedo was in high spirits when returning to LA.

“I’m happy, representing your country at the national team level is always an honor and I think we needed the results,” Penedo told LA Galaxy Insider. “Fans in Panama were asking for it and the results make us feel at ease in order to continue to work hard. We had some tough games against Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rica.”

In his first match back from national team duty, Penedo will face a team that he has enjoyed plenty of success against since arriving in MLS back in 2013. The Panamanian goalkeeper is unbeaten in four matches with the Whitecaps, compiling a 3-0-1 record.

Given his success against Vancouver, Penedo is confident that the Galaxy can earn their first win of 2015 on Saturday.

“I think that every game is different, that’s what soccer is all about. Vancouver has started the season on the right foot, we have let several points slip by and we need to start adding points both on the road and at home," Penedo said. "It’s going to be a complicated game, we will be playing on turf, and it’s a field they are familiar with. But we have a great team and we have great players to go up against them head to head.”

CARSON, Calif. – Amigraine prevented Jaime Penedo from starting the LA Galaxy’s clash with the Portland Timbers last week, but the Panamanian goalkeeper admits that he is fit and ready to start if called upon to face the Houston Dynamo on Saturday.

Migraines have been a sporadic ailment for Penedo over the past 10 years, but last Sunday’s game was the first time that the Panamanian had missed out on a match due to the issue. However, it’s not the migraine itself that rendered Penedo unable to play, but the pain medication that the 33-year-old takes that caused him to miss out on the game in Portland.

“I take a medicine to relieve the migraines but the medicine knocks me out. On Sunday, the problem was that I didn’t know if I should or shouldn’t take it [or not],” Penedo said. “I didn’t take it in the beginning and I was hoping an Aleeve would help me with the pain but it didn’t. My head was in pain so I had to take the medication, and 45 minutes later, my migraine was gone, but I felt woozy and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to play. I feel good now though.”

Although Penedo felt some migraine symptoms earlier in the week, the Panamanian says that he has practiced for three days without any lingering effects which could mean that he returns to the starting XI this weekend.

“I feel ready. I trained very well over the last few days, but now I’m ready. I was very disappointed that I couldn’t start; especially considering that Bruce Arena gave me the opportunity but it was taken away due to the migraine. I’m ready and I need to play so I await the coach’s decision.”

After enduring a year of heartbreak and failure for both club and country, Jaime Penedo finally got over the hump and ended the 2014 campaign with a championship.

Brought in as a savior for the LA Galaxy’s goalkeeping situation midway through the 2013 campaign, Penedo suffered a pair of setbacks in successive fashion as Panama failed to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and a month later LA were bounced from the postseason in the opening round.

Such disappointments stuck in the craw of the happy-go-lucky Panamanian goalkeeper heading into the 2014 season and he responded with aplomb.

During the regular season, Penedo enjoyed a 1.14 goals against average—.01 behind Goalkeeper of the Year Bill Hamid—while also making eight shutouts as he carried LA to the league’s second best record. In the playoffs, he shook off any claims that he could not come up in big games with stellar performances in LA’s series against Real Salt Lake and Seattle Sounders FC, the former which included a six save showing in the first leg.

In the MLS Cup final against New England, Penedo put forth yet another strong showing with six saves against the Revs to seal his first professional title since winning a title in Guatemala with Municipal. After years of frustration with Panama and his club teams, to win a title after such a trying season proved to be a “dream come true” for Penedo.

"It is a great blessing and a joy," Penedo told reporters after winning the title. “I dedicate this to dear God, my faith, my family, and my country.”
