The defending MLS Cup champs were knocked out of the US Open Cup by the Carolina RailHawks on Tuesday, bowing out of the competition with a 2-1 loss at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

Instead of gearing up for another SuperClásico  the Galaxy would have hosted Chivas USA, who knocked off Ventura County, 1-0  the Galaxy now will have to wait until league play resumes on June 17 for their next outing.

POSTGAME NOTES
  • With the loss, the Galaxy are out of the U.S. Open Cup. This is the first time that they have not qualified for the tournament quarterfinals since 2009.
  • This was the first time that the Galaxy have lost their first game in the Open Cup since 2009, when they lost to Colorado on penalty kicks in a U.S. Open Cup Play-In Game.
  • Leonardo was making his first appearance in an official competition since suffering a severe knee injury at Chicago in April 2011.
  • Hector Jimenez was forced to leave the game in the 44th minute with a left knee injury. He was replaced by Bryan Jordan.
  • Chad Barrett had to leave the game in the 65th minute because of cramping. He was replaced by Mike Magee.
  • Bryan Gaul left the game in the 71st minute after being hit underneath his right eye. He was replaced by Rafael Garcia.
