With the loss, the Galaxy are now 2-1-2 on the season for eight points. They are now eight points behind first place FC Dallas, who are 5-1-1 for 16 points.
This was the Galaxy’s first loss of the 2013 regular season, snapping a six-game unbeaten streak in regular season play, dating back to the end of the 2012 campaign.
Todd Dunivant, Sean Franklin and Robbie Keane all missed the game after picking up knocks on Wednesday night when the Galaxy lost 1-0 to Monterrey in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Greg Cochrane made his MLS debut in the game, playing the full 90 minutes at left back.
Leonardo was sent off in the 60th minute for a foul inside the penalty area on forward Blas Perez, leading to a penalty kick. He is the first Galaxy player to be sent off in a game since Hector Jimenez was against San Jose in May 2012.
Carlo Cudicini saved the ensuing penalty, diving low to his right to deny Kenny Cooper.
That was the first penalty save by a Galaxy goalkeeper since Josh Saunders denied Colorado’s Omar Cummings in second half stoppage time of a 2-1 Galaxy win away to the Rapids on April 21, 2012.
Landon Donovan had a penalty kick saved a few minutes later after Jose Villarreal had been pulled down in the box by Dallas defender George John.
That was the first penalty kick that was not converted by a Galaxy player since Robbie Keane sent a penalty wide at home against FC Dallas on April 28, 2012. That game finished 1-1.
FC Dallas scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute when George John headed in the rebound of a Michel corner kick for a 1-0 win.
The Galaxy have now conceded eight goals in all competitions in 2013 (four in MLS and four in the Champions League) with seven of those goals coming in the final 15 minutes of games.
