SEASON OPENER SATURDAY: The Galaxy open their 15th season of
play on Saturday night when they host the New England Revolution at The
Home Depot Center. This will be the 11th time that the Galaxy have
opened their season at home and the third time that they have done so
against the Revolution, winning 3-2 at The Home Depot Center to open the
2004 campaign and losing 1-0 to New England to open the 2006 season.
All-time the Galaxy are 6-6-2 in season openers and 9-4-1 in home
openers. They last won a season opener in 2004, defeating New England,
3-2, thanks to goals from Andreas Herzog, Jovan Kirovski and Carlos
Ruiz, and they last won a home opener in 2008, defeating San Jose 2-0
behind goals from Landon Donovan and David Beckham.
Last year, the Galaxy began their season with a 2-2 draw with D.C.
United, with Landon Donovan scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to
rescue a point for the Galaxy.
HOSTING THE REVS: The Galaxy enter Saturday's meeting with
the Revolution fresh off their first season sweep of the club in 10
years. Last year, LA defeated New England 1-0 on July 4, with Alecko
Eskandarian marking his Galaxy debut with an early goal and Josh
Saunders earning the first clean sheet of his MLS career. That win
snapped the Galaxy's nine-game winless streak against New England in the
regular season dating back to the start of the 2004 season.
Just more than a month later, Landon Donovan scored the AT&T MLS
Goal of the Year and Jovan Kirovski added the game-winner midway through
the second half as the Galaxy won 2-1 at Gillette Stadium for their
first regular season win in Foxborough since July 1999.
The two sides will meet again at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, July 10.
TWENTY RETURN FROM 2009: Of the 26 players who were on the
Galaxy roster at the end of the 2009 season, 20 are back with the club
this season. The only six players to leave are defenders Leonard
Griffin, Tony Sanneh and Julian Valentin; midfielders Stefani
Miglioranzi and Kyle Patterson and forward Alecko Eskandarian.
Those six have been replaced by defenders Alex Cazumba and Leonardo and
midfielders Juninho, Clint Mathis and Michael Stephens.
Of the 26 players who were with the team at the end of last season, only
eight of them were on the Galaxy roster when Bruce Arena was named the
club's head coach on August 18, 2008.
PRESEASON ENDS WITH SCORELESS DRAW: The 2010 preseason
officially concluded for the Galaxy on Sunday evening with a 0-0 draw
against Salvadoran side CD Aguila at The Home Depot Center. With that
result, the Galaxy completed the preseason with a 6-0-3 record, allowing
just two goals in those nine games. LA was 2-0-0 against college teams,
1-0-0 against USASA teams, was 2-0-2 against MLS opposition and 1-0-1
against foreign clubs, defeating Puntarenas FC of Costa Rica in
Fullerton, Calif. on March 10 before tying Aguila last night.
