Donovan collects Player of the Week honor

LA captain scores, tallies three assists for 11th career honor

Landon Donovan’s goal and three assists against the Seattle Sounders
on Saturday earned the LA Galaxy captain the Player of the Week award as
voted on Monday by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).

The Galaxy defeated the Sounders 4-0, lifting their undefeated record to
an MLS-best 7-0-1 while leaving Seattle in the basement of the Western
Conference.

Donovan started the move that lead to the Galaxy's first goal, laying
the ball off to Michael Stephens, who fed Jovan Kirovski. The
midfielder's shot was misread by Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller to give
the Galaxy the lead. Donovan also served up two set-piece goals in the
span of five minutes in the second-half, before scoring the
fourth-and-final tally himself in the 67th minute on a nice combination
play with Edson Buddle.

The 28-year-old Donovan leads the league with nine assists on the year,
just as he prepares to join the U.S. national team for the start of
World Cup camp on May 17 in Princeton, N.J.

American fans will be excited to see Donovan seemingly hit form just in
time for the 2010 World Cup, which starts in one month in South Africa.

Donovan has now won a total of 11 Player of the Week honors in his
career, two shy of Jeff Cunningham’s all-time record of 13. He and
Buddle now account for three of the seven Player of the Week awards on
the season. They are the only Americans to capture the honor in 2010.
