LA Galaxy’s Beckham, Donovan, Franklin and Gonzalez named to MLS All-Star First XI
CARSON, Calif. (Sunday, July 10, 2011) – The LA Galaxy, owners of the best record in MLS, had four players named to the 2011 MLS All-Star First XI today. Midfielders David Beckham and Landon Donovan and defenders Sean Franklin and Omar Gonzalez were all voted to the First XI at their respective positions from combined fan voting on three platforms – online at MLSsoccer.com, via text message, and via Twitter. The online and text voting ballot consisted of six players from each club, as chosen by a panel of media members.
This is Donovan’s 11th consecutive All-Star Game selection, while Beckham and Gonzalez are each making their second All-Star appearance. Franklin, the 2008 MLS Rookie of the Year, is a first-time selection. A 4-3-3 formation was selected for this year’s First XI because the third-ranked forward received more than twice as many votes as the fourth-place midfielder.
On Wednesday, July 27 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., the MLS All-Stars will face the defending Premier League champion Manchester United in the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game (live on ESPN2, Galavision, and TSN at 5:30 p.m. PT).
Beckham joined the Galaxy in 2007 as the club's first Designated Player. He ranks second in MLS with eight assists this season while leading the league in game-winning assists with four and adding two goals.
Donovan is currently tied with New York’s Thierry Henry for the MLS lead in goals with nine, including one in Saturday night's 2-1 win over Chicago. The 2008 Budweiser Golden Boot Winner and 2009 Volkswagen MLS MVP, Donovan has been selected to the MLS All-Star Game in each of his 11 seasons in the league, tying him for the all-time lead with Eddie Pope. With five goals scored, Donovan is tied with Brian McBride for the most goals scored in MLS All-Star Game history.
The No. 4 overall selection in the 2008 SuperDraft, Franklin has spent his entire career with the Galaxy. The Galaxy right back has appeared in 20 of the Galaxy’s 21 games, making 18 starts. A native of Palmdale, Calif., Franklin had a career-high six assists last season while also making his U.S. National Team debut in January 2011. Franklin was the 2008 MLS Rookie of the Year. This is Franklin’s first MLS All-Star Team selection.
A 2010 MLS Best XI selection and MLS Defender of the Year finalist, Gonzalez has quickly become one of the best central defenders in the league. While appearing in 18 of 21 matches this season, Gonzalez has helped LA allow just 16 goals this season, the second fewest in MLS. The 2009 MLS Rookie of the Year, Gonzalez has one goal in the league and one in the Open Cup this season. This is the second consecutive season that Gonzalez, who has two caps with the U.S. National Team, has been named to the MLS All-Star First XI.
