CARSON, Calif. – Facing a fellow MLS team for the first time this season, the LA Galaxy lost 4-1 to the Portland Timbers this afternoon on a cool and cloudy day at The Home Depot Center. Dan Keat scored LA’s only goal of the game as Bruce Arena once again made wholesale changes at halftime, with a total of 23 players seeing action in the match.

Despite a lineup that saw both David Beckham and Edson Buddle make their preseason debuts, the Galaxy fell behind early in the first half when Bright Dike headed home a corner from Franck Songo’o, giving the Timbers a 1-0 lead.

The visitors doubled that lead a minute later when Jorge Perlaza beat Josh Saunders off a pass from Songo’o, making the score 2-0.

After both teams made wholesale changes through the second half, the Timbers made it 3-0 when Kalif Alhassan threaded a pass through the Galaxy defense for James Marcelin, who beat LA goalkeeper Nick Noble to the ball and clipped a shot over him for the third goal of the game. The Galaxy had just 10 players on the field at the time as Dan Keat had exited the field a minute earlier in order to stop the bleeding from a cut that he had picked up.

Keat was back on the field shortly after the goal and pulled one back for the Galaxy 10 minutes before the end. Kyle Nakazawa, who had created a series of chances for LA throughout the second half, played a short corner to the feet of Hector Jimenez at the edge of the box. His cross was then deflected into the center of the penalty area, where Keat was the quickest to react, beating Troy Perkins with an overhead kick from six yards out, making the score 3-1.

The Timbers would round out the scoring in the 85th minute when Futty Danso scored from the penalty spot after referee Baldomero Toledo had called for a handball in the penalty area.

The Galaxy will be back in action on Friday, February 10 when they host the Houston Dynamo at The Home Depot Center. That will be the club’s third of five preseason games that they will play before heading to Arizona for the Desert Diamond Cup this month.
