Galaxy discuss Tottenham Hotspur friendly
This will be the fourth consecutive season in which the Galaxy host a major international friendly at The Home Depot Center and the second straight season that the club will take on one of the Premier League’s top clubs. Last year, the Galaxy played to a 1-1 draw with Manchester City before falling on penalties as part of the Herbalife World Football Challenge. In 2009, the Galaxy played to a 2-2 draw with AC Milan at The Home Depot Center while they beat Boca Juniors 1-0 there a year later.
"We are delighted to be able to bring another top quality international friendly for our loyal and passionate fans here at The Home Depot Center," Galaxy Chief Operating Officer Chris McGowan said. "Tottenham Hotspur are one of the top clubs in the world and are enjoying a fantastic season in the Premier League. This is sure to be one of the biggest sporting events of the summer here in Southern California and we are excited to be able to share this with Pechanga as our presenting sponsor and soccer fans everywhere."
Tottenham are currently enjoying one of their finest seasons in recent history, sitting in fourth place in the Premier League with a 16-7-6 record for 54 points. If Spurs can hold onto that position through the end of the season or move up into the top three, they would qualify for the UEFA Champions League for just the second time in club history after reaching the quarterfinals of the competition in 2010-11. One of the most exciting attacking clubs in the world, Spurs average nearly two goals a game in all competitions this year while their +18 goal differential is the fourth best in the Premier League.
“We are delighted to have the opportunity to open our U.S. tour against the current MLS Cup Champions, LA Galaxy,” said Tottenham Hotspur Chairman Daniel Levy. “With one of our former strikers Robbie Keane and David Beckham, who spent time training with us at Tottenham Hotspur, lining up for the Galaxy, there is a strong relationship between the two Clubs and we are looking forward to the chance to renew old friendships.
“As a Club we are proud of our reputation for playing entertaining soccer and believe this attacking style will appeal to fans living in Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world.”
Manager Harry Redknapp has assembled a deep and talented squad that features some of the world’s top players at every position, starting with former U.S. National Team goalkeeper Brad Friedel and international defenders Ledley King, the club captain, Michael Dawson, the club’s vice captain, William Gallas, Younes Kaboul, Ryan Nelsen and Kyle Walker. In front of them, Welsh international Gareth Bale and Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart highlight a dynamic midfield for Tottenham that also includes England internationals Aaron Lennon, Scott Parker and Tom Huddlestone, the Croatian duo of Niko Kranjcar and Luca Modric and the Brazilian Sandro. Up front, England forward Jermain Defoe, French international Louis Saha and Mexican National Team star Giovanni dos Santos have been joined by Emmanuel Adebayo, who is the club’s top scorer this year while on loan from Manchester City.
Tickets for this match are available now as part of Galaxy Season Ticket plans. Complete ticket information including the on sale date and prices for the game between the Galaxy and Tottenham, will be available at a later date through the club’s official website, www.lagalaxy.com. This will be the first game of Tottenham’s preseason U.S. tour and their only game on the West Coast. Spurs’ complete travel roster will be made public prior to their arrival in Southern California.
