NOTES:

  • With the win, the Galaxy are now 9-10-3 on the season for 30 points. They remain in fifth place in the Western Conference and are now one point behind both Seattle and Vancouver, neither of who played tonight.
  • This was LA’s first win of the season over Chivas USA, evening their record in the 2012 SuperClasico at 1-1-0. If the Galaxy win or draw the third and final leg of the series, on August 12, they will win the SuperClasico crown for a fifth straight season.
  • The win was the Galaxy’s 15th all-time in MLS regular season play against Chivas USA. LA are now 15-4-5 all-time against Chivas USA, including 9-2-2 when playing as the home team.
  • The Galaxy are now unbeaten in their last four games, going 3-0-1 in that time for their longest unbeaten streak of the season.
  • In those four games, the Galaxy have scored an average of three goals per game.
  • This was the seventh time this season that the Galaxy have scored three or more goals in a regular season game this year, with four of those coming at The Home Depot Center.
  • LA have now reached the 30-point plateau and are one win away from equaling having as many wins as losses on the season.
  • Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena made two changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Vancouver on Wednesday night. Bryan Gaul and Juninho each returned to the starting lineup, replacing Todd Dunivant, who sat out with a right calf injury that he picked up against the Whitecaps, and Michael Stephens, who began the game on the bench after starting each of the last three games.
  • In addition to Dunivant, the Galaxy were also without Andrew Boyens, Edson Buddle, Omar Gonzalez, Dan Keat, Leonardo, Mike Magee, Kyle Nakazawa and Pat Noonan, who all missed the game because of injuries.
  • LA took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Robbie Keane scored his ninth goal of the season. This was his first-ever appearance in a SuperClasico after missing the final meeting last year and the first meeting this year with injuries.
  • David Beckham and Juninho were each credited with assists on the goal.
  • Juninho now has three assists on the season, including one in each of the last two games.
  • That goal was just LA’s third in the opening 15 minutes of a game this season. They have conceded six goals in that time.
  • LA scored early in the second half as well with Landon Donovan doubling LA’s lead in the 48th minute.
  • The Galaxy’s three designated players combined on the goal with Robbie Keane and David Beckham each being credited with assists on the goal.
  • With his two assists in the game, Beckham now has nine on the season.
  • In his last four games, Beckham has four goals and four assists.
  • Keane now has five assists on the season.
  • The trio of Beckham, Donovan and Keane rank first, second and third on the club in both goals and assists.
  • Chivas USA cut the LA lead in half in the 52nd minute, with Paolo Cardozo scoring his first of the season. The goal was also Cardozo’s first-ever goal in MLS.
  • Cardozo began his career with the Galaxy meaning that every goal that Chivas USA have scored from open play against LA since April 2008 has either been scored or assisted on by a former Galaxy player. The last time Chivas USA scored a goal from open play against LA that was not scored or assisted on by a former Galaxy player was in the 38th minute of LA’s 5-2 win over Chivas USA on April 26 when Sacha Kljestan scored off a pass from Jonathan Bornstein.
  • Donovan put the Galaxy back in front by two goals with his second goal of the game in the 78th minute, scoring from close range.
  • That goal was Donovan’s ninth of the season, leaving him tied with Robbie Keane for the team lead while his 10 goals in all competitions are the most on the squad.
  • He now has nine regular season goals against Chivas USA, though this was his first since August 2008.
  • Bryan Gaul and Omar Gonzalez were each credited with assists on the goal, the first of the season for each.
  • For Gaul, it was the first assist of his MLS career.
  • Gonzalez came on in the 68th minute, replacing Hector Jimenez for the first substitute appearance of his MLS career.
  • Donovan recorded his second multi-goal game of the season and the MLS-best 28th of his career.
  • Donovan was also shown a yellow card in the 53rd minute of the game. That is his fifth booking of the season, meaning that he will now miss next weekend’s game at FC Dallas.
  • Josh Saunders finished the game with five saves for his ninth win of the season. He is now one win away from reaching double figures in wins for the second straight season.
  • Four of the 13 players that played in the game for Chivas USA had previously played for the Galaxy.
  • A crowd of 25,180 was in attendance at The Home Depot Center.
  • The Galaxy will be back at The Home Depot Center on Tuesday, July 24 when they host English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in an International Friendly. That game, which is presented by Pechanga Resort and Casino, is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
  • The club returns to MLS action on Saturday, July 28 against FC Dallas in Frisco, Texas. That game, which will be broadcast nationally on the NBC Sports Network, is scheduled to kickoff at 5 p.m.

QUOTES

LA Galaxy Head Coach Bruce Arena

On the win:

“It’s a good win for our team. I thought we played well from start to finish. It got a little sloppy in the second half but we could have scored a number of more goals tonight, we were very good going forward, I think, obviously Donovan and Keane’s passing, Beckham’s passing… It was a good team effort for the most part, we did a good job defensively, got a little sloppy in the second half but the game opened up and I thought it fell in our favor. The guys did well on short notice this week and playing on difficult surfaces; on Saturday in Portland and Wednesday in Vancouver we played on concrete and for our guys to recover and put in the effort they did tonight is outstanding. ”

On the partnership between Donovan and Keane up front:

“I think those two combined for a number of opportunities tonight and were outstanding. Certainly David as well in that group.”

On Robbie Keane’s recent run of form:

“Well you said it, he’s scoring. He’s had a number of chances, he’s putting his chances away, I think the partnership with Landon helps, there’s better coordination of the players. We made a big mistake in having players loaned out right until the start of the season, and although they played together at the end of last year they still needed time together. We started with a group of players that hadn’t had a preseason together, which is a major mistake. I accept the responsibility for that. Now we’re building into the second half of the season, they’re much more familiar with each other and they’re playing better.”

On the team’s ability to see out games:

“It’s getting better. We’ve had to stretch late… the Philadelphia game we should have got three points, we literally gave that game away. At the end of both halves we lost concentration and made some mistakes, that’s a game we should probably win by three goals that we end up losing. Weeks later we’re at least holding on and getting the points we deserve so that’s progress. In my view we could have easily a dozen wins at this point, and we have nine, so we’re making progress.”

LA Galaxy Midfielder Landon Donovan

On the team’s form:

“We’re playing well. With that, our guys that we depend on to make plays are making plays and, candidly, we’re probably leaving a few goals on the table each game. So as good as we feel about this, we know we can still do better and I think little by little defensively we’re getting better so that’s a good combination right now."

On the offensive chances:

“Yeah, could have scored more, that’s for sure. But we’re also happy with getting the chances and the way we played. I know Robbie had another one that should have counted. We’re content with how it’s going and want to keep the roll going.”

On Robbie Keane’s play:

“He’s been fantastic. He’s creating chances for himself, he’s creating chances for others, his passing is good, his movement is good and also, probably underrated, he’s been working hard defensively and helping us in that way. So when he does all that, we’re pretty hard to beat.”

On the success of his pairing with Robbie Keane at forward:

“We’re both players that are comfortable in front of the goal. We know in each game, one of us or both of us are going to get chances to score and we have a pretty good record of scoring goals, so more often than not we’re going to hit the net.”

On the play of David Beckham:

“He can do it in a lot of ways and he’s been playing great. It’s a shame he’s not going to London to play. He’s been terrific and I think most teams in the world would want a guy like that on their team right now.”

On whether they are back to playing the kind of soccer they expect:

“We’re getting there; we’ve gotten better and better. Still, giving up a goal to that team tonight is pretty unacceptable and we’re not happy about that. But, I think we’re getting there. I think we’re starting to figure out what combinations of guys on the field play well together and work well and a lot of guys are doing a lot of dirty work to make plays so that the few of us can just focus on getting in front of the goal and scoring.”

LA Galaxy Forward Robbie Keane

On what the forwards did well:

“I think we combined obviously quite well. We made it difficult for their defenders with our movement and the way we were linking up. Overall it was a good effort.”

On the recent scoring:

“It’s not me, it’s about the team improvement. We weren’t good enough before the European Championships. Collectively as a group we weren’t good enough, simple as that. It was always going to come around that we were going to start picking up results and start playing well and that’s been the case.”

On what is going differently lately:

“The team is performing better. We’re playing better as a team so, it’s simple as that really. We have the same team we had last year when we were playing well. Some reason or another, before the break we weren’t playing well as a team.”

LA Galaxy Defender Bryan Gaul

On his performance:

“I thought I did okay. I wasn’t as good on the ball as I should’ve been but defensively I thought I was pretty good.”

On fitting into the team:

“It has been different. I have been playing all these different position and I am just trying to do whatever the team needs. Todd [Dunivant] got injured, he’s a good player. I just have to try to hold on till he gets back.”

On defending against Ryan Smith:

“I thought it was going to be tricky. There was a lot of film that we watched on him. He has a lot of moves and a lot of trick in his bag but I thought overall he wasn’t as effective as he has been in the past.”

LA Galaxy Defender Sean Franklin

On playing against Chivas:

“It’s nice. I wanted to make sure it wasn’t my second time losing to them. You know, the team played well tonight. Bryan Gaul did a great job tonight playing against Ryan Smith, who’s a great player, and the team did well tonight. We finished off how it should be when we play the Goats.”

On the change in the team:

“We’re putting away those chances that we didn’t earlier in the season. I think tonight we could have had a couple more, but the team is playing well over the past month and a half and we’re creeping up the standings and the team has a lot of confidence right now.”

On the upcoming schedule:

“We know we have a friendly next week but we also have our game against Dallas and the teams’ more focused on our season. It’s going to be tough going into Dallas and getting three points there. If we just keep the same mentality that we did with the comeback we did in Vancouver, we’re a good team on the road and we know that and we got to be ready for next Saturday.”
