LA Galaxy Academy U-18’s fight back to get 2-2 draw with Real So Cal
CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013) – The LA Galaxy Academy Under-18’s dominated Real So Cal for 90 minutes, but were a bit unlucky to come away with a 2-2 draw last Sunday at Oak Park High School in U.S. Soccer Development Academy play. The Galaxy, which controlled possession for the majority of the game, was unable to break a Real So Cal defense that seemed content with putting numbers in the back.
An early goal by Real So Cal in the 8th minute of play allowed the home team to play defensively for most of the match. In the second half, however, forward Adonis Amaya finally got one back for the Galaxy just after the hour mark to even out the scoreline at 1-1. The goal was Amaya’s team-leading ninth goals in eight games.
The final 30 minutes of the game were all Galaxy as they continued to put pressure on Real So Cal with wave after wave of attack. With five minutes left in the game, Real So Cal benefitted from a penalty inside the box and was able to convert from the spot to regain the lead. But the Galaxy was not about to let a performance like this go unrewarded with zero points. With the game winding down, midfielder Jaime Villarreal (pictured above), the younger brother of Galaxy forward Jose Villarreal, buried a free kick from just outside the box to rescue a point and tie the game at 2-2. Villarreal’s goal was his third of the season, which is tied for second most on the squad with two others.
With the draw, the Galaxy improves their overall record to 5-1-2 for 17 points and holds on to first place status in the division standings. Real So Cal record is now 3-1-1 overall for 10 points and remains in third place in the standings.
The match was the club’s next to last in the calendar year before participating in the Development Academy Winter Showcase and starting on winter break.
The Galaxy Academy U-18’s don’t have a game this weekend, but return to action next weekend with a road game against Nomads SC at the University of California San Diego on Saturday, Nov. 30. The game is their final of the calendar year in Development Academy play.
Prior to the start of the winter break, the club will travel to Florida to take part in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase from Dec. 11-14. There, the Galaxy will play three games, facing Players Development Academy from New Jersey on Dec. 11, FC Dallas Academy on Dec. 12 and the Chicago Fire Academy on Dec. 14.
LA GALAXY U-16’S WIN BIG AS ZUBAK SCORES FOUR: Ethan Zubak scored four goals as the LA Galaxy Academy U-16’s beat Real So Cal 5-0 to extend their unbeaten streak to nine games in U.S. Soccer Development Academy play. Adrian Vera opened up the scoring for the Galaxy U-16’s in the 7th minute with his fourth goal of the season. Zubak, who entered the game with one goal in his previous eight games, scored four times in the second half as the Galaxy ran away with the three points. Zubak’s goals came in the 47th, 52nd, 70th and 79th minutes. Goalkeeper Bennett Sneddon played the entire 80 minutes as the squad recorded its fourth shutout of the campaign— third shutout in the last four games. The Galaxy Academy U-16’s are now 6-0-3 overall and remain in first place of the Southwest Division standing with 21 points. The Galaxy U-16’s do not have game in the books the next two weeks, but return to action Saturday, Nov. 30 with a road game against Nomads SC at 5:30 p.m. at University of California San Diego. That game is the team’s final Development Academy match of the year until Jan. 25, when the club returns from its Winter Break. In between, the Galaxy Academy U-16’s will travel to Florida from Dec. 12-15 to take part in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase. There, the Galaxy will face Capital Area RailHawks Academy U-16’s on Dec. 12, Houston Dynamo Academy U-16’s on Dec. 13 and FC Dallas Academy U-16’s on Dec. 15.
LATE GOAL PUSHES GALAXY ACADEMY U-14’S TO VICTORY: The LA Galaxy Academy Under-14’s got a late goal from forward Noa Harrison to score an important 2-1 road win over Real So Cal last Sunday at Oak Park High. Harrison, the team’s second leading scorer with five goals in eight games, scored the game winner in the 81st minute. The Galaxy were initially in front in the scoreboard when Leonardo Zulli gave the squad a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute with his second goal of the season. In the 67th minute, Real So Cal tied it up with a goal from Jason Manning. The game seemed destined to end 1-1 until Harrison’s late game heroics helped the Galaxy improve to 6-1-1 overall on the season. Next up for the squad are two U.S. Soccer Development Academy showcase games this weekend at StubHub Center. The first one is Saturday at 10 a.m. against De Anza Force’s U-14’s at 10 a.m. on Field #4, followed up with a game Sunday at 11 a.m. against Diablo Futbol Club U-14’s on Field #3.
