Three Points: The Galaxy defeat the Portland Timbers 3-1

LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano offers his analysis of the Galaxy’s big 3-1 win over Portland

CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano provides his Three Points to the Galaxy’s 3-1 win over the Portland Timbers. Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes scored in the victory for LA.

GALAXY SPREAD TIMBERS THIN IN 3-1 WIN

The LA Galaxy sought to spread the Portland Timbers wide early and often on Saturday afternoon and they did so with aplomb in their 2-1 victory.

From the outset, Bruce Arena’s team utilized the flanks as they pulled the Portland defense out of position. The tactic worked despite Diego Valeri’s opening goal as the Galaxy generated 12 shots before Gyasi Zardes equalized in the third minute of first half stoppage time from a well-placed cross by Robbie Rogers. LA’s wide play bore fruit again in the 73rd minute when Landon Donovan made a run down the left flank and launched a cross to Keane for the first of his two goals on the afternoon.

With the victory, the Galaxy break their hex of failing win after conceding first. After the victory over the Timbers, the Galaxy are now 1-4-3 when surrendering the goal.

GYASI ZARDES KEEPS ON SCORING

Gyasi Zardes continued to showcase why he is one of MLS’ top young attacking talents with a goal in LA’s 3-1 victory over the Portland Timbers.

The Galaxy Homegrown Player scored his seventh goal in eight games in LA’s 3-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Saturday to give him eight goals on the year.  Zardes was active from the start of the match with multiple opportunities, but found the back of the net when he nodded a Rogers cross past Ricketts.

With Zardes continuing his torrid scoring pace, could it be long before the forward catches the eye of U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann for the USMNT’s upcoming fall friendlies?

A PENALTY KICK GOAL

At long last, the LA Galaxy found the back of the net from the penalty spot.

After the Galaxy failed to score in three previous tries, Robbie Keane tallied in the 85th minute to seal a brace in LA’s 3-1 victory over the Portland Timbers. The goal sequence was started moments earlier when Juninho was brought down in the penalty area setting up the finish by Keane, who has now scored 12 goals on the season.

After his finish, expect Keane to continue to take Galaxy penalties in the future.
