Notes:
- With the loss, the Galaxy have been eliminated from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
- The Galaxy are now 6-2 all-time in the Open Cup Quarterfinals. This is LA’s first loss in this stage of the competition since 1999, their inaugural foray into the Open Cup.
- Bruce Arena made one change to the team that beat AC St. Louis in the Third Round of the Open Cup on June 29 at The Home Depot Center. Omar Gonzalez started in central defense alongside Leonardo, with Tristan Bowen beginning the game on the bench.
- The Galaxy were without Mike Magee, who missed the game through injury, while Gregg Berhalter, Edson Buddle and Landon Donovan were each rested for the game.
- Dema Kovalenko began the game on the bench after serving a one game suspension in the Third Round win over AC St. Louis.
- Ten of the 11 starters for the Galaxy in tonight’s game did not start in the Galaxy’s last MLS game, a 3-1 win over Seattle at The Home Depot Center on Sunday. Only Gonzalez, who is suspended for Saturday’s game at New England, started that game and this one. He played the full 90 minutes in each.
- Each of the Galaxy’s first two Open Cup games this season have been tied 0-0 at the half.
- Jovan Kirovski had the Galaxy’s best chance of the first half, hitting the right post with a shot in the 39th minute.
- Nate Jaqua’s goal in the 50th minute was the first goal allowed by Josh Saunders since the 84th minute of LA’s 3-2 loss to Colorado on April 4, 2009. Since then, he had played 656 consecutive minutes in MLS regular season, postseason and Open Cup action without allowing a goal.
- Saunders finished the game with five saves.
- LA fell behind 1-0 in the 50th minute and trailed the game for the final 40 minutes. That is the longest they have trailed a game all season long.
- The first two goals scored by Seattle were the first goals that the Galaxy had allowed in official competitions this season with Leonardo on the field.
- Chris Klein began the game as the Galaxy’s captain for the first time this season. He left the game in the 69th minute and gave the armband to Eddie Lewis.
- Dema Kovalenko replaced Klein, making his first appearance for LA since the 2-0 win at Chivas USA on April 1. He had missed the last three months with a right quad strain.
- Prior to today’s game, the last time LA gave up two goals in a game was Game One of their Western Conference Semifinal Series against Chivas USA, a game that ended 2-2.
- LA last gave up two goals in an Open Cup game in the 2006 U.S. Open Cup Final, when they lost 3-1 to Chicago.
- The Galaxy were outshot 21-10 in the game and had just two shots on goal compared to seven for the Sounders.
- The attendance for today’s game was a sellout crowd of 4,512.
- Despite the loss, the Galaxy remain nine points clear at the top of the Western Conference with an 11-1-3 mark in MLS play, giving them 39 points at the halfway point of the season.
- The Galaxy are back in action in league play on Saturday night when they take on the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. That game kicks off at 4:30 p.m. (PT) and can be seen live on Prime Ticket, starting with the “Galaxy Live” pregame show at 4 p.m.
