Milestone 100th goal is bittersweet for Donovan

Landon Donovan says there are no problems with the Galaxy's scoring output.

On Sunday evening, Landon Donovan’s locker was adorned with posters from well-wishers congratulating him on reaching yet another milestone in his illustrious career. But there was no joy on this night for the midfielder himself.

The Galaxy captain scored his 100th MLS regular season goal in a 3-2 loss to the Chicago Fire. He later added his 101st. Both goals came from the penalty spot, and both were part of a Galaxy comeback that was not to be. After conceding three goals inside the first 20 minutes of the match, the Galaxy's furious fight back fell short in the end.

Although the milestone is a major achievement for Donovan, its achievement on a night when the Galaxy suffered their first home loss of the season made it immensely bittersweet.

“I’m certainly proud of it because not a lot of players do that,” said Donovan. “But I wish that it would have come in a better manner.”

Donovan is only the sixth player to score 100 regular season goals. With his two goals in Sunday’s match, Donovan lifted his season tally to five and his career tally to 101, tying him with New England Revolution striker Taylor Twellman for 5th alltime.
