AMSTERDAM - With reports swirling that the club is set to sign free agent striker Edson Buddle, German second flight survivalists Ingolstadt have decided to extend the trial of Aris FC loan outcast Freddy Adu.

Having seen the Benfica property work a combined 75 minutes in friendlies against Kickers Offenbach and Gaziantepspor during their winter camp in Turkey last week, manager Benno Möhlmann would like to give Adu more time to show what he can do with better match fitness.

"The trainer says he is not in the right constitution to help directly, but a 'future player' with great prospects," Ingolstadt press officer Oliver Samwald told MLSsoccer.com on Monday morning. "So they are still thinking about a transfer."

Meanwhile, German paper Die Weit is reporting that Buddle has completed a successful medical exam at Audi Sportpark and is preparing to sign a contract.

The club declined to comment at this time on Buddle, who recently trained with Birmingham City and has been linked with interest from Rangers.

The US forward - whose MLS deal expired last month - is currently seventh on the all-time league goal chart. Buddle has scored 90 in 231 games with the Columbus Crew, the New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC and the Los Angeles Galaxy, with whom he earned 2010 Best XI honors.
