Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation Focuses on Fun and Fitness By Hosting Camps For Kids

CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, July 5, 2011) – The Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation will join forces with The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation to focus on fun and fitness by hosting the first of their annual Camps for Kids on Wednesday, July 6 at The Home Depot Center. Camps for Kids is an opportunity for approximately 200 children ages 7-10 to participate in a camp that features soccer drills, including dribbling, passing, and shooting as well as fitness tips.


Children from the following organizations will be participating: LAPD Devonshire PAL, Union Rescue Mission, Crittenton Services, Anaheim COPS 4 Kids, LAPD Hollenbeck PAL, The Salvation Army-San Pedro, Casa de Amigos de San Vicente, Los Angeles Parks & Recreation, City of Compton Parks & Recreation, City of Carson Parks & Recreation, Villaggio Summer Program and Koinonia Foster Homes.


Galaxy Soccer Camps’ staff will provide instruction and basic soccer skills for the camp, which the kids will be able to continue practicing at home. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles will be speaking to the children about health and distributing band aids and hand sanitizer. The Breathmobile, in partnership with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, will be offering educational sessions and asthma screening to the children in attendance to raise awareness.


South Bay Family Healthcare Mobile Clinic will be on site providing screenings for children to check their weight, body mass index, and risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. In addition, South Bay Family Healthcare will offer the children health education materials, coloring books designed to educate them on good nutrition and the benefits of exercise and diabetes prevention.


Each participant will receive a Camps for Kids t-shirt, a Revolution Foods’ lunch and a camp gift bag including a soccer ball and an activity booklet from MLS W.O.R.K.S.’ Active Bodies, Active Minds program, which is a soccer-centered community outreach initiative that provides resources to motivate and reward children for being mentally and physically fit.
