LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane named to Ireland roster for Upcoming EURO 2012 Qualifiers

CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, August 23, 2011) –LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane was one of 25 players named today to the Ireland National Team roster by head coach Giovanni Trapattoni for their upcoming EURO 2012 Qualifiers against Slovakia and Russia on September 2 and September 6, respectively. Keane, the captain of Ireland’s squad, made his Galaxy debut on Saturday, scoring his first goal for the club during a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at The Home Depot Center. He has made 109 career appearances for his country, scoring 51 goals, making him Ireland’s all-time leading goal scorer.


Keane will join up with the rest of the Ireland team following the Galaxy’s game in New York against the Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena on Sunday, August 28 before returning to the club ahead of the showdown with the defending MLS Cup champion Colorado Rapids on Friday, September 9 at The Home Depot Center.


Ireland are currently tied for first place with Russia and Slovakia with identical 4-1-1 records in Group B of qualifying for the 2012 European Championship, with Keane scoring five goals in six matches. They host Slovakia at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Friday, September 2 at 11:45 a.m. Four days later, Ireland travels to Moscow to take on Russia at Luzhniki Stadium at 8 a.m.
