CARSON, Calif. — Chad Barrett scored early in the second half as the LA Galaxy beat Chivas USA 1-0 in the SuperClasico at The Home Depot Center on Sunday.

The game was nearly a photocopy of the teams' first meeting of the season, when Barrett scored the only goal in a 1-0 Galaxy win on May 21.

This time around, though, Juan Pablo Ángel was on the other side, but the Chivas USA striker was unable to get much service and had little impact against his former team.

Galaxy captain Landon Donovan did not dress for the match. Donovan missed the last Galaxy match — a 2-0 loss to New York on Oct. 4 — as well as both US national team matches in the last 10 days, with an injury despite training with the squad in the week leading up to the match.

Also, the Galaxy made do without Robbie Keane, as the striker returned from Ireland duty injured and could be out for up to four weeks, according to published reports.

Right away on Sunday, the Galaxy put pressure on Chivas USA's goal. Barrett broke in alone on 'keeper Dan Kennedy but couldn't get a ball into the back of the net as Goats defender Andrew Boyens rushed back to clear the ball right off the line.

In the 11th minute, Chivas USA's Michael Lahoud had a look from 15 yards out but ripped a shot just wide of the goal.

Neither team threatened much until the start of the second half. Chivas' Nick LaBrocca found himself unmarked some 12 yards out and fired a shot on goal, but Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders easily parried the ball away.

The Galaxy finally opened the scoring in the 53rd minute when Adam Cristman and Barrett combined with one another on a header. Cristman took control of the ball on the right side of the penalty area and floated a ball across the box for Barrett, who easily headed the ball home from inside the six.

Ángel had brief moments of freedom in the latter stages of the second half, but Galaxy defenders swarmed around him to keep him from getting a clean shot on goal.

The Galaxy have a CONCACAF Champions League game against Motagua on Oct. 20 in the group stage finale, before facing the Houston Dynamo in their final match of the MLS regular season on Oct. 23.

Chivas USA, meanwhile, will close their season against the Seattle Sounders on Oct. 22.
