LA Galaxy Academy Update

CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, December 7, 2011) – The LA Galaxy Academy teams went 1-2-3 in six games played at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase in Sarasota, Fla. over the weekend. The Galaxy U-18 team went 1-0-2 in their three games, including a 3-0 win over the Clearwater Chargers on the first day of the showcase, to remain unbeaten on the season (7-0-2 overall, 4-0-0 SoCal Division). Mario Rodriguez led the team in scoring with three goals; Jose Villarreal finished second with two. The Galaxy U-16 (4-3-2 overall, 3-1-0 SoCal Division) team went 0-2-1 in their three games. Jaime Villarreal led the team in scoring with three goals, including two in their first game, a 3-3 tie against the Clearwater Chargers.

LA Galaxy U-18’s 3, Clearwater Chargers 0                 Friday, December 2                 PSC – Field 16 (Grass)

Three first half goals by Irving Parra, Jose Villarreal and Mario Rodriguez were enough to give the Galaxy a 3-0 win in their USSF Development Academy Winter Showcase opener. The win extended the club’s winning streak to seven and improved their overall record to 7-0-0, 4-0-0 in the SoCal Division.


LA Galaxy U-16’s 3, Clearwater Chargers 3                 Friday, December 2                 PSC – Field 16 (Grass)

Jaime Villarreal scored two goals and Mario Ortiz added another to give the Galaxy a 3-3 draw against the Clearwater Chargers in their first of three games in the USSF Development Academy Winter Showcase. After taking a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute with Villarreal’s first of two goals on the day, Clearwater came back with two goals from Danny Lane, in the 58th and 59th minute, to take the lead. After Ortiz scored the game-tying goal in the 67th minute, Villarreal gave the lead back to the Galaxy a minute later. But a goal from Clearwater’s Brandon Kim in the 80th minute tied at 3-all. With the tie, the Galaxy moved to 4-1-2 overall, 3-1-0 in the SoCal Division.


LA Galaxy U-18’s 1, Texans SC Houston 1                   Saturday, December 3             PSC – Field 5 (Grass)

The Galaxy extended their unbeaten streak to eight games with a 1-1 tie against the Texas SC Houston in their second game at the USSF Development Academy Winter Showcase. Jose Villarreal gave the Galaxy a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute with his second goal in the tournament. But Texas SC answered at the hour mark with a goal of its own from Leobardo Vasquez. The Galaxy improved their overall record to 7-0-1 with the draw, 4-0-0 in the SoCal Division.


LA Galaxy U-16’s 1, Texans SC Houston 4                   Saturday, December 3             PSC – Field 5 (Grass)

The Galaxy suffered their first loss at the USSF Development Academy Winter Showcase. Matthew Perez, who scored the lone Galaxy goal in a 4-1 defeat to Texans SC Houston, scored the game’s first goal in the 21st minute. Texas SC answered back quickly with two goals right before halftime, and then two more in the first 15 minutes of the second half to take control of the game. The Galaxy fell to 4-2-2 overall, 3-1-0 in the SoCal Division.


LA Galaxy U-18’s 2, Concorde Fire 2                           Sunday, December 4               PSC – Field 10 (Grass)

Two goals from Mario Rodriguez in the final minutes of the game gave the Galaxy a 2-2 draw against Concorde Fire in the club’s third and final game at the USSF Development Academy Winter Showcase. The draw improved the Galaxy’s unbeaten streak to nine. The Galaxy fell behind early on in this one, giving up two goals in the first 10 minutes. Rodriguez, who finished the tournament with a team-high three goals, cut the lead in half in the 87th minute and then scored the equalizer just before the whistle in the 90th minute. After three games in Florida, the Galaxy are now 7-0-2 overall, 4-0-0 in the SoCal Division.


LA Galaxy U-16’s 1, Concorde Fire 3                           Sunday, December 4               PSC – Field 10 (Grass)

Jaime Villarreal scored his third goal at the USSF Development Academy Winter Showcase in the 63rd minute of a 3-1 loss to Concorde Fire. Three goals in the first 30 minutes doomed the Galaxy in this game. The Galaxy are now 4-3-2 overall, 3-1-0 in the SoCal Division.


LA Galaxy U-12’s 2, Real So Cal 0                               Sunday, December 4               North Ranch

Owen Zaldivar helped the LA Galaxy maintain their second place position in the standings by scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Real So Cal at North Park in Thousand Oaks on Sunday. Goalkeepers Alain Hernandez and Jordan Aldama combined for the shutout as the Galaxy improved their overall record to 7-2-1.


THE WEEK AHEAD

Only one of the six Galaxy Academy teams is in action this weekend in both SCDSL and the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.
