Three Points: LA Galaxy 5-3 victory over the Portland Timbers

PORTLAND, Ore. – It looked bleak at the start, but thanks to a four goal deluge over a nine minute span, the LA Galaxy earned a 5-3 victory over the Portland Timbers.

Lifted by the play of their three designated players –in particular David Beckham – the Galaxy wiped out an early deficit in what was an exciting back-and-forth contest.

A few notes on the match:

• The Galaxy’s four goals in nine minutes ties an MLS record for the shortest span to four goals. Tying a record set on May 19^th, 2004 by the Los Angeles Galaxy in a victory over DC United. That Galaxy team tallied four goals between the 35^th and 44^th minutes.
• LA conceded three goals on set piece opportunities.
• Homegrown academy product Jose Villarreal made his MLS debut coming on in the closing minutes of stoppage time. Villarreal had only been deemed eligible to play on Saturday.
• Designated players scored seven of the game’s eight goals with Beckham and Robbie Keane each scoring two goals apiece while Landon Donovan added one. Meanwhile, on the Timbers side, Kris Boyd scored his a brace of his own.
• With the win, LA has now won their last two matches.
