Jose Villarreal named to U.S. Under-20 roster

CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, October 2, 2012) – LA Galaxy forward Jose Villarreal was one of 19 players named to the United States Under-20 National Team roster for the 2012 Marbella Cup, which will be held in Marbella, Spain later this month. Villarreal, who signed with the Galaxy as a Homegrown Player in December, will join up with the rest of the U.S. U-20 squad following LA’s game against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. The squad will fly to Spain on Sunday and Villarreal is scheduled to rejoin his Galaxy teammates ahead of their final road game of the MLS regular season at San Jose on Sunday, October 21.


Villarreal Highlights

Villarreal has appeared in 11 games for the Galaxy in all competitions this season, scoring once and adding an assist in eight league games while starting all three of the club’s CONCACAF Champions League matches, scoring once in that competition. The 19-year-old made his Galaxy debut late in the 5-3 win over Portland on July 14 and then scored the first goal of his MLS career four days later with an 87th minute equalizer in the 2-2 draw at Vancouver.


The U.S. will play three games while in Spain, opening the competition against Canada on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Tab Ramos’ squad will be back in action two days later on Friday, Oct. 12 when they face Scotland before concluding the tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 16 when they take on Azerbaijan.


Villarreal and the Galaxy are back in action on Saturday night when they host Real Salt Lake at The Home Depot Center. The game, which is presented by Amgen Breakaway from Cancer, kicks off at 6 p.m. and will be Fan Appreciation Night with the club offering fans a series of exciting giveaways, prizes and experiences.
