LA Galaxy sign Omar Gonzalez as the club's third Designated Player

CARSON, Calif. -- It's official.  


Omar Gonzalez is the LA Galaxy's third Designated Player.


The Galaxy announced on Thursday that the 24-year-old center back has been signed to a DP contract allowing him to become the first defender signed to such a contract. Drafted by the Galaxy with the third overall selection in 2009 MLS SuperDraft from the University of Maryland, Gonzalez has made 119 regular season appearances for LA  -- 118 of them starts. During his time with LA, Gonzalez has racked up the honors as he was named the 2009 Rookie of the Year, 2011 MLS Defender of the Year, and 2012 MLS Cup Final MVP while also being named to the MLS Best XI twice. 


Gonzalez is the fifth DP in Galaxy history and joins David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Juan Pablo Angel and Robbie Keane. He is also the sixth American DP joining Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Freddy Adu, Claudio Reyna, and Chris Wondolowski.
