CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, November 26, 2013) – The LA Galaxy announced today that captain Robbie Keane has been voted the club’s Most Valuable Player for a second straight season. One of three finalists for the Volkswagen MLS MVP award, Keane led the Galaxy with 16 goals and 11 assists in 23 games during the 2013 regular season. Just the third player in club history to win the club’s Most Valuable Player award in consecutive seasons, Keane received all but one first place vote from the local media who vote on the award. In addition to winning the club’s Most Valuable Player award, Keane also took home his second consecutive Golden Boot as the club’s top goal scorer. Keane tallied a team-best 16 goals during the regular season, giving him six more tallies than Landon Donovan, who finished second on the club with 10 goals.
In the other award voted on by the media, Omar Gonzalez has been selected as the club’s Defender of the Year for the third time in the last four years. Gonzalez, who finished third in the voting for the MLS Defender of the Year, appeared in and started 27 games for the Galaxy this season, helping the club keep 10 clean sheets and collect a 13-7-7 record in those matches, compared to a 2-4-1 record in the seven games that he missed. Playing his first full season since suffering a serious knee injury in January 2012, Gonzalez scored once and added two assists while only committing 17 fouls and being booked just twice during the regular season.
Sean Franklin rounds out the Galaxy award winners for the year as he claimed the club’s Humanitarian of the Year award for his work in the local community. A Southern California native, Franklin has now won the award in two of the last three years having first been selected for the honor in 2011. In 2013, Franklin connected with fans and their individual community projects while also serving as a role model for his college soccer team. The sixth-year defender also volunteered at numerous LA Galaxy Foundation events and took the time to meet with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles patients and Make-A-Wish children after every home game. Throughout the year, Franklin also volunteered his time and reputation in support of a number of different causes including the Union Rescue Mission’s Annual Thanksgiving Celebration, Wednesday’s Child, LA Regional Food Bank, Learn4Life, Ryan Rossi Central America Orphanage Soccer Tournament, Servite High School’s Friar Feast and Rosemary’s Children’s Services as well as assisting with the Galaxy Foundation’s annual Treats and Suites Halloween Event and LA Galaxy Camps for Kids.
