Sean Franklin selected by D.C. United in Stage One of MLS Re-Entry Process

Franklin Re-Entry

CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, December 12, 2013) – Sean Franklin, who played for the LA Galaxy from 2008-13, was selected today by D.C. United with the first pick in Stage One of the MLS Re-Entry Process. The 2008 MLS Rookie of the Year and an MLS Cup winner with the Galaxy in 2011 and 2012, Franklin ranks eighth in club history with 160 regular season appearances and 150 starts in a Galaxy shirt. In all competitions in his Galaxy career, Franklin appeared in 195 games, making 182 starts while scoring seven goals and adding 24 assists.

Originally selected by LA in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, Franklin appeared in 27 games as a rookie en route to becoming the first Galaxy player to win the MLS Rookie of the Year award while also claiming the club’s Defender of the Year award. An MLS All-Star in 2011 when he scored a career-best four goals to go along with three assists, Franklin scored five goals and added 20 assists all-time in the regular season as a member of the Galaxy. He set club records in 2012 when he played in all 34 of LA’s regular season games, starting 33 of them, while tallying five assists. The five assists were one shy of his career-best of six, which was set in 2010 while his 20 career assists for the club are tied for the ninth-most in Galaxy history.

Franklin appeared in and started 18 of the 19 postseason games that the Galaxy have played over the last five years. After tallying four assists in the 2012 MLS Cup Playoffs, including one in the MLS Cup victory over Houston, Franklin scored the first postseason goal of his MLS career in the first leg of LA’s Western Conference Semifinal Series against Real Salt Lake last month.

In addition to his club career with the Galaxy, Franklin also made one appearance with the U.S. National Team, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 home draw with Chile in January 2011. A native of Palmdale, Calif., Franklin played his college soccer at Cal State Northridge, where he was a three-time All-Big West Conference First Team selection.
