Goal of the Year: Jose Villarreal at Toronto FC

Jose Villarreal Goal of the Year

WHO: Jose Villarreal

WHEN: Saturday, March 30

WHERE: at Toronto FC – BMO Field

WHAT: Playing their first road game of the 2013 MLS season, the Galaxy were staring at their first loss of the year as well as they entered stoppage time trailing 2-1. Mike Magee had given the Galaxy a 1-0 lead in the first half and Landon Donovan, making his first appearance of the year, nearly scored within seconds of stepping onto the field. However, it would be Villarreal that rescued a point for the visitors.

In second half stoppage time, Omar Gonzalez lofted a long, diagonal ball forward into the box toward Magee and Colin Clark. Toronto defender Darel Russel won the header but could only direct it into the center of the penalty area where Villarreal was quickest to pounce. The young, Homegrown forward leapt into the air, avoiding the challenge of Danny Califf, and powered a volley past TFC goalkeeper Joe Bendik, earning LA a 2-2 draw and a share of the points at BMO Field.
