Goal of the Year: Robbie Keane vs. Real Salt Lake

Robbie Keane Goal of the Year

WHO: Robbie Keane

WHEN: Saturday, August 17

WHERE: vs. Real Salt Lake – StubHub Center

WHAT: Goals came in bunches for Robbie Keane in 2013 with the Galaxy captain tallying five multi-goal games in his 23 regular season appearances, including a pair of hat tricks. The second of those came on August 17 as the Galaxy began a three-game winning streak with a 4-2 demolition of Real Salt Lake at StubHub Center.

With the Galaxy trailing 1-0 Keane scored his first of the game in the 56th minute, showing off his superior footwork and finishing ability, beating Nick Rimando from the edge of the box. His second goal, which came just 10 minutes later, showed off his nose for goal as he beat his defender to the near post and was able to contort his body in order to redirect a Sean Franklin cross into the net, making the score 2-1.

But the clear pick of the litter was Keane’s third, his 10th of the season, which showcased the full arsenal of his goal scoring talents. Positioning himself between RSL’s two center backs, Keane was able to race onto Sean Franklin’s perfectly weighted, chipped through ball and shrug off a challenge from Carlos Salcedo before controlling the ball just inside the area and lobbing the on-rushing Rimando for his third goal of the contest.
