LA Galaxy II earn road victory over Oklahoma City Energy FC

CARSON, Calif. (Saturday, July 19, 2014) – The LA Galaxy II (10-5-4, 34 points) earned a 1-0 victory on the road against Oklahoma City Energy FC (6-8-4, 22 points) Saturday evening at Pribil Stadium behind a late goal from Galaxy Homegrown player Raul Mendiola.

After a scoreless match for over 70 minutes of the game, Mendiola buried the game winner in the 75th minute of play to give the visitors all three points on the night. From the left side, Galaxy II midfielder Dragan Stojkov put in a ball to Mendiola inside the box before the Homegrown player smashed it past Oklahoma City goalkeeper Samir Badr.

A shutout performance from Galaxy II goalkeeper Cody Laurendi also boosted Galaxy II. In the 55th minute, Laurendi stretched out to make a diving save on a hard shot from Energy FC’s David Leichty to keep the score level before Mendiola’s eventual game winner. In all, Laurendi recorded three saves on the evening.

Los Dos survived a nervy moment when referee Kyle Phillips had issued a red card to Galaxy goalkeeper Cody Laurendi in the 63rd minute after a collision with OKC’s Steven Perry at the top of the LA penalty box. He later rescinded the card as the flag had been raised to call Perry offside before the collision happened, keeping the Galaxy II at full strength for the remainder of the match.

After improving to 10-5-4, good enough for 34 points in USL PRO play, head coach Curt Onalfo’s side will now travel to Anteater Stadium at UC Irvine to face Orange County Blues FC Saturday, July 26 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
