LA Galaxy II fall to Pittsburgh Riverhounds on the road

Jose Villarreal

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014) – LA Galaxy II (11-7-4, 37 points) fell to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, 3-1 Saturday night at Highmark Stadium in the final match of a four-game road swing as a first-half goal from Jose Villarreal wasn’t enough to overcome three goals from the home side.

Los Dos opened the scoring in the 17th minute as a pair of LA Galaxy Homegrown Players connected for the goal. Raul Mendiola lobbed a ball behind the Pittsburgh defense to Jose Villarreal before he calmly chipped a ball over the Pittsburgh goalkeeper and into the net. Villarreal, making his LA Galaxy II debut, recently returned to the LA Galaxy from loan with Mexican side Cruz Azul before being loaned to Los Dos.

The Riverhounds tied the match in the 30th minute when Joseph Ngwenya scored on a rebounded ball that was initially punched away by Los Dos goalkeeper Cody Laurendi. Ngwenya found himself in front of the goal and pounced on the loose ball to make the score 1-1.

Pittsburgh added another before halftime when a Danny Earls free kick went untouched in the box and subsequently bounced in the net.

Following halftime, the Riverhounds sealed the game in the 77th minute as Kevin Kerr headed in a cross for Pittsburgh to make the score 3-1. Galaxy II applied heavy pressure offensively for the remainder of the match, but were unable to find another goal.

After their fourth consecutive road game, Curt Onalfo’s side will now return home to face Arizona United SC this Saturday, Aug. 8 at 7:30 p.m. PT at StubHub Center.
