LA Galaxy forward Landon Donovan named MLS Player of the Week

CARSON, Calif. (Monday, Sept. 29, 2014) – LA Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 29 of the 2014 MLS regular season. This is the fourth Player of the Week honor for Donovan this season.

Donovan had a hand in each of the Galaxy’s four goals in their 4-0 win over the New York Red Bulls on Sunday, scoring himself and assisting on the other three. With the three assists on the evening, Donovan tied Steve Ralston for the MLS assist record at 135. His 17 assists this season lead MLS and are a new career high. He is also now tied with Ralston for the MLS record in game-winning assists at 41.

In the 8th minute, Donovan notched his first assist on the night. Donovan spotted Robbie Keane at the top of the 18-yard box and delivered a ball to the feet of the Irish international, which he scored with a chip shot over Red Bulls goalie Luis Robles.

Donovan scored his only goal of the night, and second for the Galaxy, in the 50th minute. A cross into the box by Omar Gonzalez was mishandled by Red Bulls defender Chris Duvall as Donovan dispossessed the rookie and curled a shot in to the right side of the goal.

A second assist came in the 69th minute as a combination with Gyasi Zardes saw Donavan receive the ball at the center of the box before he played a one-touch pass to Zardes, who scored past a diving Robles.

Donovan’s final and MLS record-tying assist came in the 82nd minute of the game to Robbie Keane. Donovan lobbed a ball from the center circle into the box to Keane, who finished past Robles again.

LA Galaxy will play host to the Eastern Conference’s Toronto FC at StubHub Center this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PT live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes.
