Omar Gonzalez and Robbie Keane called up to respective national teams

CARSON, Calif. (Monday, Oct. 6, 2014) – LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane and defender Omar Gonzalez have been called up to their respective national teams for October matches, the club announced today. Keane will represent the Republic of Ireland in EURO 2016 qualifying matches against Gibraltar Saturday, Oct. 11 in Ireland and Germany Tuesday, Oct. 14 in Gelsenkirchen. Gonzalez joins Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan for the U.S. Men's National Team’s camp ahead of a friendly against Ecuador Friday, Oct. 10 in East Hartford, Conn. (4 p.m. PT, ESPN, WatchESPN, UniMas and ESPN Deportes Radio). USMNT Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann is expected to make roster changes for the team’s match against Honduras in Boca Raton, Fla. on Oct. 14.


Keane will be unavailable for selection when the Galaxy face FC Dallas this Sunday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. PT on the road at Toyota Stadium, live on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.


Keane, 34, is Ireland’s captain and all-time leading goal scorer with 62 goals. Since earning his first call up in 1998, the veteran forward has made over 130 appearances for his country. For the Galaxy, Keane has scored 19 goals and notched 14 assists this season. In his MLS career, the Irishman has tallied 53 goals and 35 assists.


Gonzalez, 25, earns his first call up since representing the U.S. in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where he started in two matches and made three appearances overall. He has appeared in over 20 matches for his country since earning his first call up in 2010. This season with the Galaxy, Gonzalez has started in 20 matches for a backline that has allowed an MLS-low 31 goals.


When the USMNT face Ecuador on Oct. 10, Gonzalez will join teammate Landon Donovan, who is set to play in his final match with the U.S. Men’s National Team.
