CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, July 14, 2015) – LA Galaxy forward Alan Gordon has been called up to the U.S. Men’s National Team roster by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Gordon, who replaces Jozy Altidore, will join ahead of a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday, July 18. Per tournament regulations, teams had the opportunity to make up to six changes to the roster in the 24 hours following the completion of the group phase.
Gordon will depart following the Galaxy’s U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal game against Real Salt Lake on Tuesday, July 14 and be unavailable for selection when the Galaxy face the San Jose Earthquakes at StubHub Center on Friday, July 17. The forward will join LA Galaxy teammates Omar Gonzalez and Gyasi Zardes, who helped the U.S. to a first-place finish in Group A.
The Long Beach product made his first and only appearance for his country in 2012 as a substitute against Antigua and Barbuda in a FIFA World Cup Qualifying match when he provided the game-winning assist to Eddie Johnson. Gordon was also called up for the 2013 Gold Cup after the USMNT advanced to the group stage. This season for the Galaxy, Gordon has made 20 appearances and six starts, recording four goals including two game-winning goals. Since joining the Galaxy last season, he has recorded nine goals and an assist in 34 MLS appearances.
The U.S. will play on Saturday, July 18 at 2 p.m. PT at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. Should the USMNT advance, they would play the semifinal match Wednesday, July 22 for a chance to appear in the Gold Cup Final on Sunday, July 26.
The winning team qualifies for a playoff to determine which CONCACAF team participates in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup (a World Cup dress rehearsal which features the champion from each region in the world, the defending World Cup Champion, and the host, which in 2017 will be Russia). With the Gold Cup win in 2013, the U.S. has already qualified for that playoff. Should the MNT win the Gold Cup this summer, it would earn an automatic bid for the Confederations Cup.
DaMarcus Beasley and Joe Corona have also been added to the U.S. team and will report to Baltimore in advance of the USA's Quarterfinal matchup. Beasley comes in for Greg Garza and Corona for Alfredo Morales.
