CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano provides his Three Points from the Galaxy’s 5-2 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes.
ROBBIE KEANE AND STEVEN GERRARD LEAD THE RALLY
The San Jose Earthquakes did all they could to spoil Steven Gerrard’s MLS debut, but connection between the chemistry between Gerrard and Robbie Keane was ultimately too much for the Quakes to handle.
After Quincy Amarikwa notched a brace in the opening 25 minutes to give San Jose, LA cut the lead to one when Keane slotted a penalty, won just moments earlier after a foul on Steven Gerrard. San Jose’s lead evaporated just seven minutes later when interplay between the DPs eventually found Baggio Husidic, who crossed it across the goalmouth to Gerrard who scored his first career MLS goal.
The big guns completed the comeback in the 64th minute when Robbie Keane cleverly flicked Gerrard’s low free kick into the back of the net. Keane added his third in the 80th minute on his second penalty kick of the evening.
GERRARD OPENS HIS ACCOUNT IN STELLAR SHOWING
Turns out this Steven Gerrard guy can play a little bit of soccer.
With former Galaxy stars David Beckham and Landon Donovan in the capacity crowd at StubHub Center, Gerrard excelled tallying one goal and an assist in 88 minutes during his first career MLS match. Starting as a withdrawn striker, Gerrard terrorized an Earthquakes defense that seemed content to sit back after taking an early lead. Gerrard opened his account in 37th minute with a vintage finish off a Husidic cross, and then added an assist on Keane’s second goal of the evening.
Gerrard nearly scored his second in the 79th minute when he had the ball in the back of the net but Alan Kelly called the play back for a penalty for LA after Baggio Husidic was tripped up.
WHAT A NIGHT!
The LA Galaxy put Major League Soccer on warning with a remarkable comeback in their California Clásico victory over the San Jose Earthquakes.
Not only did Robbie Keane score his fourth hat trick of his Galaxy career to tie Cobi Jones for the most in club history, but Steven Gerrard showed that he’ll be a force in MLS with a goal and an assist in his league debut. The DPs weren’t alone, however, as Sebastian Lletget scored his fifth goal in eight matches since joining the Galaxy. In total, the Galaxy have scored 19 goals in their last four league matches at home.
With Gyasi Zardes, Omar Gonzalez, Jaime Penedo, Alan Gordon and Giovani Dos Santos still to return from international duty, who knows what the ceiling for this Galaxy team could be?
