CARSON, Calif. – Winning the CONCACAF Champions League is a major goal for the LA Galaxy, and the signing of Giovani dos Santos is another step in that plan according to club president Chris Klein.

The Galaxy kick off their participation in the 2015-16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League on Thursday when they face Central FC of Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday. LA won the tournament during its previous format in 2000 but has not advanced past the semifinal round since the competition was rebranded.

After falling in the semifinals in 2013 and the quarterfinals a year ago, Klein admitted that adding Mexican international to a squad that already boasts players like Robbie Keane, Steven Gerrard, Omar Gonzalez, and Gyasi Zardes can only help LA’s prospects.

“We want to be the first club from MLS to win Champions League. We want to set the standard for MLS like we’ve done so many times before,” Klein said. “Everything sets it up. We’ve been wanting to make a push for a couple of years now. Mexican teams are very good and of a high quality but we’re getting there. Scheduling is also something that we need to look at but this is a move toward winning competitions like MLS Cup and competitions like Champions League.”
