LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos named to Mexico roster for CONCACAF Cup 2015

CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015) – LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos has been named to Mexico’s roster by head coach Ricardo Ferretti for CONCACAF Cup 2015 between the United States and Mexico set for Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, Calif. The match will be aired live on FOX Sports 1, Univision and Univision Deportes Network (UDN) at 6:30 p.m. PT. Dos Santos will also remain with Mexico for a match on Tuesday, Oct. 10 when Mexico host Panama at the Estadio Nemesio Diez in Toluca, Mexico.
The Mexican forward will be available for selection when the Galaxy face Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field this Sunday, Oct. 4 (6:30 p.m. PT, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports Deportes)
The CONCACAF Cup, pitting 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup champion United States against 2015 Gold Cup champion Mexico, will determine the Confederation’s representative in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, to be played in Russia.
Dos Santos, 26, earns the call after helping lead Mexico to the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup title this summer, recording a goal and an assist during the tournament that ended with El Tricolor defeating Jamaica in the final. He began his international career began with the Mexico U-17 side when he helped win the 2005 U-17 World Championship and earned the tournament’s Silver Ball award. He also spent time with Mexico’s U-20 side at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, leading his team to a quarterfinals appearance. In 2012, the attacker helped Mexico make history by scoring three goals en route to winning the 2012 London Olympics Gold Medal, the first time Mexico has received gold in Olympic soccer
In 2007, Dos Santos earned his first cap with the senior Mexican national team, making an appearance against Panama. His first goal for Mexico came in 2009, when he recorded a brace in a match against Venezuela. Since then, he has made over 80 appearances for his country in competitions including two FIFA World Cups, FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and CONCACAF Gold Cups. He also helped lead Mexico to the 2011 Gold Cup championship, scoring a brilliant goal against the USMNT in Pasadena to seal a victory in the final
This year for the Galaxy, Dos Santos has started seven MLS regular season match for the Galaxy, recording three goals and four assists. In nine appearances across all competitions, the forward has recorded four goals and six assists for LA. Dos Santos has also now had three games in which he has both scored and recorded an assist.
In 2013, CONCACAF announced the split of the region's berth to the FIFA Confederations Cup between two editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, assuring that both editions of the Gold Cup in each four-year cycle have the same importance from a competitive perspective. By winning the recent 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Mexico qualified for the CONCACAF Cup presented by Scotiabank, against the 2013 Gold Cup champion, the United States.
