LA Galaxy to honor Los Angeles sports legend Izaak Torres ahead of match Saturday

CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, March 16, 2016) – The LA Galaxy will honor Los Angeles champion and sports icon Izaak Torres during the California Clásico against San Jose Earthquakes at StubHub Center this Saturday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. PT. Torres, who will fulfill his wish of meeting the Galaxy through Make-A-Wish® Orange County and the Inland Empire, will also be escorted by a limousine to StubHub Center this Friday, March 18, at 9:45 a.m. PT to attend LA Galaxy training with his family in preparation for Saturday’s match.

“People always ask the question, ‘What is a champion?’” said LA Galaxy captain Robbie Keane. “A champion is someone who can overcome things, have mental strength to do whatever they want and achieve whatever they want. There are big champions in LA if you look at basketball and soccer. But for me, there is only one champion and that’s Izaak.”

Ahead of kickoff for Saturday’s match, the Costa Mesa product will be honored at midfield in front of the crowd at StubHub Center before accompanying captain Robbie Keane to the LA Galaxy team onto the field during the opening player procession.

“People get put into the champion category far too easily in this day and age,” said LA Galaxy midfielder Steven Gerrard. “But when you look at this unique guy, who pushes himself and stays strong and upbeat, he deserves every bit of praise he gets.”

Torres, 13, suffered from a kidney disease before receiving a kidney transplant last year. He has played soccer for several years as a striker, and was selected as an All-Star this season. He will be honored Saturday while cheering on his favorite player, Steven Gerrard.

The Galaxy will honor Torres Saturday during #ThisIsLA Night, celebrating the rich history of Los Angeles sports.
