Three things we learned from the LA Galaxy’s 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes

CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy Insider Adam Serrano provides his “Three Things We Learned” from the Galaxy’s 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes.

GYASI ZARDES BAGS A BRACE

Gyasi Zardes brought the LA Galaxy offense back to life with a pair of goals in the LA Galaxy’s 3-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes.

After the Quakes were reduced to 10 men, Gyasi Zardes capitalized on the man advantage and exploited the additional space in the midfield.

His hard work found dividends in the 56th minute when he was able to poke home a Jelle Van Damme cross for the opener. Just six minutes later, Zardes found the back of the net again after a failed Quakes clearance fell perfectly to the Hawthorne product for the smooth finish.

The multi-goal game was the fourth of Zardes’ Galaxy career. The LA Galaxy Homegrown Player has been prone to scoring in bunches, and his strong showing against the Earthquakes could lead to more goals when the Galaxy return from the international break in two weeks.

BAGGIO HUSIDIC IMPRESSES AFTER GERRARD INJURY

Baggio Husidic rose to the occasion after coming in following Steven Gerrard’s injury in the opening stages of the Galaxy’s win over the Earthquakes.

After Gerrard left the match with a left calf injury in the third minute of play, Husidic was immediately called into the action and seemed to combine well with Nigel de Jong in the center of the park. With De Jong covering a lot of ground to break up Earthquakes attacks, Husidic was able to push forward and was heavily involved in the attack.

The Galaxy will have two weeks rest before their next match, giving Gerrard ample time to recover, but Husidic offers the Galaxy a serviceable replacement if the Englishman is unable to participate.

ISMAIL ELFATH LIKES GIVING OUT CARDS

Head referee Ismail Elfath had an eventful night and drew the ire of both sides after giving out a whopping eight cards and awarding a penalty during Saturday night’s match.

With the California Clásico once again incredibly physical affair from the opening whistle, the referee was active all night during an extremely chippy game. Elfath’s decisions led to cries of inconsistency from both sides.

The decisive moment of the match came in the 45th minute when the official sent off Simon Dawkins for a sliding tackle from behind on Sebastian Lletget.
