U.S. Open Cup a top priority for the LA Galaxy after win in Portland | INSIDER

PORTLAND, Ore. – The LA Galaxy are making the U.S. Open Cup a top priority.

Los Angeles advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup by earning a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers on Wednesday at Providence Park. The win secured their second consecutive trip to the quarterfinals and a match with Seattle Sounders FC on July 20 at StubHub Center.

“It’s important. Our fans want this. We want it,” said defender A.J. DeLaGarza. “We haven’t won a trophy in a couple of years, so we’re taking it seriously…We did well [Wednesday] in a tough environment. It was a good showing from everyone.”

After a long history of failures in the tournament during Bruce Arena’s tenure—the club has never advanced past quarterfinals since he joined in mid-2008—the Open Cup is of great significance this time around.

“We want to win everything that we can,” midfielder Sebastian Lletget said. “We understand the pressures put upon us. We’re a huge club, and we want to win this as much as we want to win the league.”
