Match Report: Sweden upsets USA in dramatic penalty shootout to advance to Olympic semifinals

Sweden

Sweden upset the United States and advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 Olympic Games in a dramatic penalty kick victory.

Alex Morgan scored the equalizer for the Americans in the 77th minute after Stina Blackstenius put the Swedes ahead 11 minutes earlier. Lisa Dahlkvist scored the winning penalty for the Swedes who won the shootout 4-3.

The match was a cagey one between the Americans and Sweden, who are led by former USWNT head coach Pia Sundhage. Both sides had numerous opportunities to score the winner late, but the match was ultimately decided by penalties.

The victory by Sweden snaps a run of three consecutive gold medal victories for the United States
